Although users list a variety of challenges, a top concern is related to subscription and licensing. With the infrastructure scaling, the subscription and licensing costs of the software can become expensive for some users. This is a pain point for many people who see changes in the infrastructure or need to purchase additional licenses. It is extremely important to investigate these elements in order to avoid putting a strain on your wallet in the case of a change in the team:

-   **Upgrade value:** Even if there is no possibility of changes in your company in the short term, you need to investigate the cost of upgrading the product and the fee of buying extra licenses in order to avoid surprises in the future.
    
-   **Subscription type:** Vendors usually offer monthly or annual subscriptions. While a monthly subscription offers more flexibility, the annual subscription is usually cheaper—however, a long-term contract can be more complicated if your infrastructure changes during its period.
    
-   **Extra costs:** Vendors may charge additional costs for situations such as software implementation, training, and customer support. Therefore, investigate all fees before signing a contract.
    

In addition to subscription and licensing concerns, users also list performance speed and connectivity as top challenges. Some users noted slow performances of the software on their computers, and others also complained about connectivity issues while using local networks and VPNs.

Lastly, based on our analysis, 38% of small business software buyers we surveyed last year reported challenges addressing security concerns when purchasing software. Another 37% reported challenges with compatibility with existing systems (37%).\[[6](#sources)\]

One way of dealing with the issue is to involve different teams in the software purchase, such as compliance, IT, cybersecurity and the team responsible for the acquisition, so that they can carry out technical assessments of the software.

“You might even want to pay someone outside of the organization to do that for you,” says Johnstone. “Or ask someone in your team to spend a day with a company that is already using the software. It may cost you extra, but I promise you it will cost you a lot more if you don’t.”
