Email marketing has the highest software adoption rate of any sales or marketing category at 75%, yet only 40% of users call it critical to their operations, according to Capterra's Global 2025 Sales and Marketing Software Trends Survey. So the question for most owners is no longer whether to buy, it is which product fits a small team and a small budget. That is exactly what email marketing for small business software has to get right: low cost, fast setup, and enough automation to run campaigns without a specialist.

To answer it with evidence rather than opinion, I analyzed 2,617 verified small business reviews on Capterra, all written between July 2024 and July 2026 by people at companies with two to 200 employees. I ranked the 13 products below by their overall Capterra rating and paired each score with what reviewers actually say, so these are my picks, backed by the review data. If you want to browse the full category first, start with Capterra's [email marketing software](https://www.capterra.com/email-marketing-software/) listing.

Quick takeaway

- For most small teams, **MailerLite** and **Brevo** hit the best balance of price, ease, and features.

- **Flodesk** wins on design for creators.

- **EmailOctopus** and **Sender** are the lowest-priced solid picks.

- **Klaviyo** leads for ecommerce, and **ActiveCampaign** offers the deepest automation if you accept a steeper learning curve and higher cost.

## The 13 best email marketing tools for small businesses

### 1\. [Flodesk](https://www.capterra.com/p/207268/Flodesk/): best for creators and design-led brands

**Capterra rating:** 4.97/5 (33 small business reviews)

#### Trial/Free Version

- Free Trial
- Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

**Starting price:** $25/month flat rate, unlimited subscribers, with a free trial

Reading the Flodesk reviews, the pattern is clear: people pick it for how the emails look, not for its automation depth. It draws the highest satisfaction in my entire set, and design is the reason, 75% of Flodesk review sentences are positive, the highest share of any product here.

**Key features:**

- **Flat-rate pricing:** you pay one price no matter how many subscribers you add, which suits list growth

- **Design-first templates:** visual layouts aimed at a polished, non-generic look

- **Workflows and forms:** simple automations and signup forms built in one place

- **Checkout and sales pages:** sell digital products without a separate tool

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- Owners want a designer-quality email without hiring a designer

- The flat rate removes the fear of a bill that climbs with every new subscriber

"Very easy to use and with lots of possibilities for your business. I like that the look and feel is very nice and non-branded. The templates are great, the design options too. I like that I can build my workflows and forms with just one tool and in the same place."

Edna C., CEO, Used the software for: 2+ years

_**Where it falls short:**_ _Reviewers point to limited integrations and thinner advanced customization, so teams that need deep segmentation or a wide app stack feel the ceiling early._

### 2\. [Sender](https://www.capterra.com/p/139770/SENDER/): best for the tightest budgets

**Capterra rating:** 4.94/5 (35 small business reviews)

#### Trial/Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

**Starting price:** $10/month, with a free plan and a free trial

Sender earns a perfect 5.00 support score in my data, the only product to do so, and it lands the lowest entry price in the group. The reviews read like a budget story: a free tier that covers real sending needs, then a low paid step when you outgrow it.

**Key features:**

- **Free plan with real limits:** enough monthly sends for a small list before you pay

- **Drag-and-drop builder:** template creation without code

- **Contact list import and folders:** organize existing lists quickly

- **Email and SMS:** basic multichannel at a low price

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- The free tier lets a new business start at no cost and upgrade only when it sends more

- Support quality reassures owners who have no in-house technical help

"They have a free option which works for us due to the limited number of emails that we send per month. The ease of use the buildability of the templates and able to link the ease of uploading our existing contact lists and we can create folders to separate them."

Mandie Y., Director of Engagement, Marketing, Chief Compliance Officer, Used the software for: 1-2 years

_**Where it falls short:**_ _Reviewers report occasional bugs and gaps in advanced organization, such as managing several branded domains under one account._

### 3\. [EmailOctopus](https://www.capterra.com/p/147415/EmailOctopus/): best for simple, low-cost newsletters

**Capterra rating:** 4.81/5 (102 small business reviews)

#### Trial/Free Version

**Starting price:** $10/month, with a free plan

EmailOctopus is the pick for owners who want to send a reliable newsletter and nothing more. Its value score (4.79) sits near the top, and reviewers keep returning to two words: dependable and affordable.

**Key features:**

- **Free plan for small lists:** send newsletters at no cost up to a subscriber cap

- **Simple scheduling:** set and forget campaign sends

- **Customizable email designs:** edit templates without technical skills

- **Solid deliverability:** reviewers report emails landing in inboxes

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- The price stays low as the list grows, unlike contact-based premium tools

- The learning curve is short enough for a first-time sender

"A free platform where I can schedule emails to be sent. It is very user-friendly and easy to use. The email designs are customizable. I haven't received a single complaint from a subscriber about not receiving our emails, so this is dependable. If you have an issue or question, the customer service is excellent."

Jennifer E., Secretary, Used the software for: 1-2 years

_**Where it falls short:**_ _The editor frustrates some reviewers (no undo button), and the platform lacks the advanced reporting and segmentation found in pricier tools._

### 4\. [Systeme.io](https://www.capterra.com/p/198994/Systeme/): best for all-in-one (email, funnels, and a site)

**Capterra rating:** 4.80/5 (148 small business reviews)

#### Trial/Free Version

- Free Trial
- Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

**Starting price:** $17/month flat rate, with a free plan

Systeme.io reviewers rarely talk about email alone. They talk about running a whole business (a website, funnels, a course, and email) from one login. For a solo owner, that consolidation is the draw, and it shows in a 4.79 value score.

**Key features:**

- **Website and funnel builder:** landing pages and sales funnels alongside email

- **Course and product sales:** sell and deliver digital products in the same tool

- **Marketing automation:** rule-based email sequences

- **Free plan:** a genuine no-cost tier to start

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- One tool replaces three or four, which cuts both cost and setup time

- Beginners get a single place to launch without stitching apps together

"By far the greatest part to Systeme.io is how intuitive and user friendly it is. It is amazing how much something so simple and easy to use has elevated my company. I love how it's a website and email platform in one. It has simplified my business and streamlined the communication process."

Jenna L., Administrative Assistant, Used the software for: Less than 6 months

_**Where it falls short:**_ _Reviewers flag frequent upgrade prompts on the free plan, and email deliverability and setup carry the most negative sentiment for this product._

### 5\. [Brevo](https://www.capterra.com/p/132996/brevo/): best for multichannel (email and SMS)

**Capterra rating:** 4.74/5 (1,088 small business reviews)

#### Trial/Free Version

- Free Trial
- Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

#### Screenshots

**Starting price:** $9/month (usage based), with a free plan

Brevo has by far the largest review base here (1,088), which makes its 4.74 the most statistically stable high score in the group. Reviewers value the mix of email, SMS, and light CRM at a low price, and ease of use is its top-praised topic. See the full [Brevo reviews](https://www.capterra.com/p/132996/brevo/) on Capterra for more detail.

**Key features:**

- **Email and SMS in one:** run both channels from one contact list

- **Usage-based pricing:** pay for sends, not contacts, which suits large but infrequent lists

- **Automation workflows:** visual sequences for welcome and follow-up emails

- **Basic CRM:** track contacts without a separate system

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- The send-based price fits businesses with big lists and low frequency

- One platform covers email, SMS, and contacts, which reduces tool sprawl

"I really appreciate that the support people at Brevo follow through to make sure the problem is resolved. When they notified me that I had hit my limit I mentioned that my site had been attacked. They could have said OK and left it at that but they helped me make sure that my email was secure. That's going above and beyond."

Kent B., Owner, Used the software for: 2+ years

_**Where it falls short:**_ _The most common complaints center on occasional bugs and campaign-statistics accuracy, which makes some reviewers double-check their reporting._

### 6\. [Klaviyo](https://www.capterra.com/p/156699/Klaviyo/): best for ecommerce stores

**Capterra rating:** 4.69/5 (74 small business reviews)

#### Trial/Free Version

- Free Trial
- Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

#### Screenshots

**Starting price:** $20/month, with a free plan

Klaviyo is the store owner's pick. Its functionality score (4.74) is among the highest in the set, driven by deep ecommerce integrations and behavior-based segments. The trade-off shows in its value score (4.28), the second lowest here.

**Key features:**

- **Ecommerce integrations:** direct connections to Shopify, WooCommerce, and similar platforms

- **Behavioral segmentation:** target shoppers by purchase and browsing activity

- **Prebuilt flows:** abandoned-cart and post-purchase automations out of the box

- **Revenue reporting:** tie email sends to sales

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- Store owners want email tied directly to shopper behavior and revenue

- The prebuilt ecommerce flows save setup time for a lean team

"We switched to Klaviyo from a different product (Hubspot) because the increase in prices and features we didn't need to use. Klaviyo's email building function is perfect for what we need. It's easy to use, and the ability to build lists and segments is useful and also user friendly."

Anonymous User, Marketing, Used the software for: 1-2 years

_**Where it falls short:**_ _Cost is the top complaint, the bill climbs quickly with list size, and reviewers say a few basic actions take longer than they should._

### 7\. [MailerLite](https://www.capterra.com/p/136603/MailerLite/): best for ease of use and value

**Capterra rating:** 4.60/5 (118 small business reviews)

#### Trial/Free Version

- Free Trial
- Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

#### Screenshots

**Starting price:** $12/month, with a free plan and a free trial

MailerLite is my pick for the widest range of small teams, and the reviews explain why: a generous free plan, a clean editor, and enough extras (landing pages, popups, even a basic site) to avoid buying more tools. It balances ease and value better than any mid-priced option here.

**Key features:**

- **Generous free plan:** a large free tier for testing and early sending

- **Drag-and-drop and automation builders:** both visual and beginner-friendly

- **Landing pages and popups:** capture signups without extra software

- **AI writing assistant:** draft subject lines and copy faster

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- The free plan is roomy enough to run real campaigns before paying

- The interface suits beginners while still offering automation

"MailerLite is very beginner-friendly. The drag-and-drop editor makes designing emails fast, and the automation builder is visual and intuitive. The free plan is generous compared to competitors, which makes it great for testing. Deliverability has also been solid, and the platform includes extras like landing pages, popups, and even a website builder without needing additional tools."

Eric R., CEO, Used the software for: Less than 6 months

_**Where it falls short:**_ _A few reviewers find the pricing higher than expected as lists grow, and a minority report occasional bugs._

### 8\. [SendPulse](https://www.capterra.com/p/146369/SendPulse/): best for multichannel on a budget

**Capterra rating:** 4.57/5 (61 small business reviews)

#### Trial/Free Version

**Starting price:** $12/month, with a free plan and a free trial

SendPulse packs email, SMS, chatbots, and even landing pages into a low-cost plan, which appeals to owners who want several channels without several bills. Its scores are solid across the board, though support (4.08) trails the leaders.

**Key features:**

- **Multichannel messaging:** email, SMS, and chatbots in one account

- **Free plan:** a no-cost tier for small lists

- **Automation flows:** trigger-based email sequences

- **Landing pages:** build simple capture pages in the platform

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- Several channels in one tool keep costs down for a small team

- The free plan lowers the risk of trying it

Overall, SendPulse is a powerful and flexible platform. It simplified my marketing and customer communication workflows.

Rafael M., Sales & Marketing Manager, Used the software for: 1-2 years

_**Where it falls short:**_ _Template flexibility draws the most negative sentiment, and support response is the weakest dimension in its scores._

### 9\. [Zoho Campaigns](https://www.capterra.com/p/253223/Zoho-Campaigns/): best for Zoho users

**Capterra rating:** 4.45/5 (22 small business reviews)

**Starting price:** $2.50/month, with a free plan and a free trial

If your business already runs Zoho CRM or Zoho Books, Campaigns is the natural, low-cost add-on. Its scores are balanced, and its appeal is the tight fit with the rest of the Zoho stack. With only 22 reviews in my set, treat its score as directional.

**Key features:**

- **Zoho ecosystem sync:** native connection to Zoho CRM and other Zoho apps

- **Prebuilt automations:** ready-made sequences to save setup time

- **Customizable templates:** edit designs for campaigns

- **Low entry price:** one of the lowest-priced paid plans here

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- Existing Zoho customers get email that plugs into their current data

- The price fits a tight marketing budget

Zoho Campaigns is a robust and affordable email marketing platform it helped me to manage effective email campaigns.

Shivam S., Assistant Category Manager, Used the software for: 1-2 years

_**Where it falls short:**_ _Reviewers say onboarding takes time, and navigation plus loading speed leave room for improvement._

### 10\. [HubSpot Marketing Hub](https://www.capterra.com/p/171840/HubSpot-Marketing/): best for scaling teams

**Capterra rating:** 4.44/5 (226 small business reviews)

**Starting price:** $20/month/seat, with a free plan and a free trial

HubSpot is the option a small business grows into. Reviewers value the all-in-one link between email, CRM, and reporting, and its top-praised topic is marketing and sales alignment. The catch is cost: pricing is its single biggest complaint.

**Key features:**

- **Email plus CRM:** campaigns tied to a full contact database

- **Automation and workflows:** rule-based sequences across the funnel

- **Reporting and analytics:** campaign and pipeline data in one view

- **Free tier to start:** basic tools at no cost before upgrading

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- Email connects to sales data, which suits teams that track leads to revenue

- The platform grows with the business instead of being replaced

"The tool can get expensive as your contacts and needs grow. While it's packed with features, some advanced functionalities are locked behind higher-tier pricing, which can be frustrating for smaller businesses. Additionally, the initial learning curve might be steep for those unfamiliar with marketing software."

Samuel B., CTO, Used the software for: 1-2 years

_**Where it falls short:**_ _Cost rises steeply at higher tiers, and reviewers note a learning curve for teams new to marketing software._

### 11\. [Mailchimp](https://www.capterra.com/p/110228/MailChimp/): best for getting started with a known brand

**Capterra rating:** 4.42/5 (453 small business reviews)

Error

**Starting price:** $13/month, with a free plan and a free trial

Mailchimp is the name most owners reach for first, and its ease-of-use score (4.55) backs that up. It is a strong starting point, though its value score (4.09) reflects a common theme: the price climbs as the list grows. Browse the [Mailchimp reviews](https://www.capterra.com/p/110228/MailChimp/) for the full picture.

**Key features:**

- **Familiar, easy editor:** a short path to a first campaign

- **Free plan:** a no-cost tier for small lists

- **Automation and templates:** prebuilt sequences and designs

- **Wide integrations:** connects to many ecommerce and website tools

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- Brand familiarity lowers the risk of a first software choice

- The free plan and templates get a beginner sending quickly

“More and more people and companies are detecting MailChimp as spam, reducing its effectiveness. There is the larger issue of young people turning away from email as the primary means of communication. MailChimp may do better pivoting marketing campaigns to social media verticals."

Jimmie G., Creative Director, Used the software for: 1-2 years

_**Where it falls short:**_ _Pricing scales fast with contacts, and a share of reviewers raise deliverability and spam-placement concerns._

### 12\. [Constant Contact](https://www.capterra.com/p/31898/Constant-Contact/): best for events and nonprofits

**Capterra rating:** 4.42/5 (166 small business reviews)

#### Trial/Free Version

**Starting price:** $12/month, with a free trial

Constant Contact is a long-standing pick for nonprofits, associations, and event-driven businesses. Reviewers value the event tools and phone support, and its ease-of-use score (4.55) matches Mailchimp's. The [Constant Contact vs Mailchimp](https://www.capterra.com/compare/31898-110228/Constant-Contact-vs-MailChimp) page sets the two side by side.

**Key features:**

- **Event and RSVP tools:** promote and manage events from email

- **List management:** organize and segment contacts

- **Phone support:** direct help, which many small teams value

- **Templates and scheduling:** design and time campaigns

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- Event and RSVP features suit nonprofits and membership groups

- Reliable phone support helps owners with no technical staff

"The layout editor is pretty inflexible, or at least not a 'friendly' user experience. While they have a lot of templates, there are definitely limitations on the creativity end. You can't resize images within blocks, for example, and when you create a new block yourself, you can't copy and paste them into a new template or save them as a content block for reuse."

Anonymous User, Founder, Owner, Used the software for: 2+ years

_**Where it falls short:**_ _The template editor is the top complaint for its inflexibility, and pricing rises as the contact list grows._

### 13\. [ActiveCampaign](https://www.capterra.com/p/79367/ActiveCampaign/): best for advanced automation

**Capterra rating:** 4.19/5 (91 small business reviews)

#### Trial/Free Version

- Free Trial
- Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

**Starting price:** $15/month, with a free trial

ActiveCampaign is the automation specialist, and its reviews split more than any other product here: strong marks for workflow depth, but the lowest overall (4.19), value (3.60), and support (3.86) scores in my set. It rewards teams that use its depth and frustrates those that do not.

**Key features:**

- **Advanced automation:** branching, behavior-triggered workflows

- **Sales CRM:** pipeline tools alongside email

- **Segmentation and personalization:** granular targeting

- **Large template library:** many prebuilt automations

**Why small businesses choose it:**

- Teams that need real automation depth find it here at an accessible entry price

- Email and a sales CRM live in one tool

"ActiveCampaign is packed with good features like task automation, which helped us handle our usual tasks quickly. Features like chat made it easy to interact with our clients and leads during marketing campaigns. I also find it easy to use even though it's a pretty robust software."

Celine J., Social Media Manager, Used the software for: 2+ years

_**Where it falls short:**_ _Cost is the top complaint, and the value and support scores trail every other product on this list, so smaller teams should weigh the learning curve before committing._

## What to look for in email marketing software

The right tool depends on your list size, your budget, and how much automation you need. These four questions narrow the field fast.

### How much will it cost as my list grows?

As of July 2026, entry-level email marketing software plans typically start at around $2.5 per month, while comprehensive solutions with advanced functionality can exceed $50 per month.

### How easy is it to launch a first campaign?

Ease of use is the strongest satisfaction driver in the category, with 82% positive sentiment. If you have no technical help, favor the tools that score highest on ease: Flodesk, Sender, EmailOctopus, and MailerLite all clear 4.6.

### How much automation do I actually need?

A simple newsletter needs far less than a behavior-triggered ecommerce flow. Match the tool to the job: EmailOctopus or Sender for newsletters, MailerLite or Brevo for mid-level automation, ActiveCampaign or Klaviyo for advanced flows.

### Does it fit the tools I already use?

If you run a Shopify store, Klaviyo's integrations matter most. If you already use Zoho, Campaigns plugs into your data. If you want email plus a website and funnels in one, Systeme.io removes several tools at once.

## Frequently asked questions

Which email marketing software is best for a small business?

In the reviews I analyzed, MailerLite and Brevo offer the best balance of price, ease, and features for a general small business. Flodesk rates highest overall (4.97) and suits design-focused creators, while Klaviyo leads for ecommerce. The best fit depends on your list size and budget.

Is there free email marketing software for small businesses?

Yes. Sender, EmailOctopus, Systeme.io, Brevo, MailerLite, Klaviyo, SendPulse, Zoho Campaigns, HubSpot, and Mailchimp all offer a free plan. These tiers cap contacts or monthly sends, so they suit new or small lists before you upgrade to a paid plan.

What is the easiest email marketing tool to use?

Flodesk (4.97), Sender (4.91), and EmailOctopus (4.81) hold the highest ease-of-use scores in my analysis. Ease of use is the most positively reviewed topic in the category, so most small business tools are beginner-friendly, but these three lead.

Is Mailchimp or Constant Contact better for a small business?

Both score 4.42 overall in the reviews I analyzed and both rate 4.55 on ease of use. Mailchimp offers a free plan and wider integrations, while Constant Contact adds event tools and phone support but no free plan. Ecommerce sellers tend to prefer Mailchimp; event-driven and nonprofit teams lean toward Constant Contact.

How much should a small business budget for email marketing?

Most paid plans start between $2.50 and $20 per month. Budget for your projected list size rather than today's, since contact-based tools raise the price as subscribers grow. Flat-rate options such as Flodesk and Systeme.io keep the cost predictable.

Do I need email marketing software if I use Gmail?

Yes, once you send to more than a handful of people. A dedicated platform handles list management, unsubscribes, compliance, templates, and reporting that a standard inbox cannot, and it protects your sender reputation when mailing at scale. ## Bottom line

The data points one way: for small businesses, the tools that win are not the biggest names. Across 2,617 reviews, the budget and design-led products (Flodesk, Sender, EmailOctopus, and Systeme.io) out-rate the household brands, and pricing is the recurring complaint that pulls the premium tools down.

My read is this. Start with MailerLite or Brevo if you want a safe, well-rounded choice, drop to Sender or EmailOctopus if budget is tight, and step up to Klaviyo or ActiveCampaign only when your automation needs justify the higher cost and steeper learning curve. Use the comparison table near the top to match a product to your list size, then read a few recent reviews for your shortlist before you commit.

**Product selection:** All ratings are based on verified reviews from small business users (companies with 2–200 employees) collected on Capterra between July 2024 and July 2026. To be included on this list, a tool had to meet all of the following quantitative thresholds:

- At least 20 reviews from small business users.

- At least 50% of total reviews from small business users, confirming the tool genuinely serves this segment rather than being primarily an enterprise product with a small number of SMB reviewers.

- To qualify for this list, products needed ratings of at least 4.0 across overall, ease of use, value for money, and customer support from verified small business reviewers.

These filters were the selection criteria. Ease of use, value, and support scores are therefore consistent across all 13 tools, every tool on this list meets the same minimum bar on these dimensions.

From 40 tools that passed the quantitative filters, products that are not primarily email marketing platforms and niche tools serving audiences outside standard small business use cases were removed, resulting in the final list of 13 tools. No tool paid to be included.

**Pricing methodology:** Pricing was verified against vendor websites in July 2026. Several tools have moved to contact-sales pricing models; rates may change. Always verify current pricing directly with the vendor.

**Reviews excerpts:** Review excerpts are passages extracted from longer reviews written by verified reviewers. We obtain these excerpts by applying an algorithm that considers factors including, but not limited to, length, sentiment, topic coverage, and thematic relevance. Excerpts represent user opinion and do not represent the views of, nor constitute, an endorsement by Capterra or its affiliates. Excerpts are not edited for clarity or grammar.

**Survey methodology**

Capterra’s 2025 Sales and Marketing Software Trends Survey, conducted July 2025 among 2,452 respondents across 11 countries, screened for management-level roles overseeing sales or marketing operations at companies with more than one employee.
