**TL;DR** _For this article, I analyzed 2,527 Capterra reviews from small and midsize businesses to find the six best managed service provider_ [_(MSP) software tools_](https://www.capterra.com/msp-software/)_. This covers tools for remote monitoring and management (RMM), remote access, backup, and other key capabilities that smaller businesses can use effectively._

When you run a small team managing IT in-house or for external clients, the problem is always the same: no single tool does it all. Patching endpoints, running remote sessions, and checking backups may run across a web of tools rather than just a single platform. “All-in-one” is a common promise you’ll see in marketing pitches, but that doesn’t always stand up to scrutiny, unless you pay, larger, enterprise-level prices or for larger-scale systems than you may be able to manage.

This is why I’ve looked over some of the best options for MSP software for SMBs and drilled down into their reviews on Capterra from the last two years. By looking over the reviews from small-scale business users, I’ve been able to find options that work best when you’re more financially constrained or need a solution that fits your organization's scale or client needs.

This comes at an important moment for companies as IT technology is changing quickly, and adapting the right system is now a priority. In [Capterra’s 2026 Software Buying Trends survey](https://www.capterra.com/resources/software-buying-trends-2026/), IT management software is one of the top three investment priorities behind IT security and generative AI (Gen AI).

The MSP tools I’ve selected below are listed in ranking order based on their overall scores from reviewers in the last two years.

## The six best MSP software picks at a glance

| Product | Best for | Overall rating over last two years (SMB reviewers) | \# reviews over last two years (SMB reviewers) | Starting price |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [**Action1**](https://www.capterra.com/p/180609/Action1-RMM/) | Patch management on lean IT teams | 4.95 | 104 | Free (up to 200 endpoints) |
| [**Zoho Assist**](https://www.capterra.com/p/112011/Zoho-Assist/) | Budget-friendly remote support | 4.78 | 408 | $12/month (Standard, 1 technician, billed annually) |
| [**Cove Data Protection**](https://www.capterra.com/p/163343/Backup-and-Recovery/) | MSP-native backup and disaster recovery | 4.64 | 312 | Contact vendor |
| [**TeamViewer ONE**](https://www.capterra.com/p/194565/TeamViewer/) | Most widely reviewed remote support in the category | 4.42 | 194 | Contact vendor |
| [**N-sight RMM**](https://www.capterra.com/p/163344/N-sight/) | RMM for growing MSPs | 4.35 | 123 | Contact vendor |
| [**N-central**](https://www.capterra.com/p/13803/N-central/) | RMM for larger, more complex client bases | 4.17 | 158 | Contact vendor |

_Ratings and review counts reflect verified MSP software reviews from SMB reviewers in our dataset. Pricing noted per product is indicative and should be confirmed on each vendor's site._

## How we picked this list

I built this list of top managed service provider software based on verified reviews from small and midsize business MSP users on Capterra. To qualify, a product had to:

- Hold a minimum overall rating of 4.0

- Carry at least 100 reviews from SMB reviewers within the past 24 months.

- Deliver one or more of MSP software's core capabilities: remote monitoring and management, backup and recovery, or issue management.

- Fall within Capterra's Managed Service Providers (MSP) Software category definition.

I then ranked the qualifying tools by overall rating, breaking ties by review count, to arrive at the list of the best MSP tools below.

## 1\. Action1: Best for Patch Management on Lean IT Teams

Action1 dashboard showing endpoint vulnerabilities, missing updates, and installed software across an organization's device fleet

[Action1](https://www.capterra.com/p/180609/Action1-RMM/) is at the top of this list and earns its place thanks to its dedicated tools for automated patch management and endpoint monitoring. What proves especially useful for smaller teams is that it allows endpoint coverage of 200 machines for free before having to pay for a subscription. Unsurprisingly, it has earned the highest score (4.95 out of 5) from reviewers at small businesses over the last two years.

Not only that, reviewers are quick to point out more benefits, such as fast setup and ease of use once it is up and running. What also works well is its ability to reduce manual effort in patching, even when working in a small team. This is a real bonus for companies that operate with fewer employees or that are just getting themselves started.

#### Device Compatibilty

**Key features**

- Automated patch management for Windows, macOS, and Linux, including third-party applications

- Endpoint monitoring and IT asset inventory

- Remote access built into the same console

- Scheduled and custom compliance reports (SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI DSS)

**What users like about Action1**

Reviewers keep coming back to how quickly Action1 gets a small IT team up and patching, without a prolonged or tricky setup process.

- The one-click patching workflow is practical for lean teams because nobody has to babysit rollouts across dozens of devices. Most reviewers who mention it (51%) say setup and day-to-day use are straightforward.

- Faster patch cycles are useful for teams accountable for compliance deadlines, since fewer manual steps mean less room for a missed update. Many reviewers (25%) call out the time it saves them.

- Feature depth comes up often, too with almost a quarter (22%) of reviews mentioning it.

**What users dislike about Action1**

Feedback is more mixed on how complete the feature set feels as teams grow into it.

- Missing features are the most common complaint, tied to specific integrations or advanced controls reviewers wanted but didn't find. Many reviewers (28%) raise it.

- There are a few reviews that mention reporting gaps come up for teams that need more customizable output.

- A handful of reviewers point to rough edges in the interface.

**What a verified Capterra reviewer says**

"Patch Management in Action1 is easy and comprehensive. Remote control is a nice added bonus. Further the 200 clients are perfect for corporate trials or supporting family and friends. Every quarter, Action1 seems to release new features. Many of the features we were looking for have been added in just the 4-5 months we have been using the product."

Joshua B., Owner, Information Technology and Services

_**Bottom line:**_ _Action1 is great for lean IT or MSP teams, or for those just starting out. It provides strong patch management without requiring enterprise resources and offers a generous free-forever tier that includes a full range of features and 200 endpoints. Its 4.95 score from reviewers is also well above the category average of 4.47 in the last two years._

## 2\. Zoho Assist: Best for Budget-Friendly Remote Support

Zoho Assist remote support dashboard showing active and scheduled remote sessions with customers

[Zoho Assist](https://www.capterra.com/p/112011/Zoho-Assist/) also scores very highly among reviewers and stands out for its interconnectivity with other Zoho software, as well as its value for those needing remote support tools.

It can benefit smaller teams by covering remote support essentials and allowing unattended access to be managed easily. This is possible without having to rely on pricy tiers that bundle more advanced features that teams might not need. In addition to this, it also boasts good interconnectivity with integrations. These can help MSPs avoid needing to log in and out of different systems or transfer data manually across their tech stack.

Reviewers also find it a reliable choice, managing smooth operation across a varied network of devices and holding steady even on slower or more inconsistent connections.

- Multi-factor authentication built into every session

- Web-based unattended access to configured devices from anywhere

- Multi-monitor navigation during remote sessions

- Cross-platform support across Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android

**What users like about Zoho Assist**

Reviewers most often single out how responsive the support team is when something does go wrong, alongside the tool's connectivity.

- Many reviewers (27%) specifically call out fast, responsive customer support. This proves practical for teams that can't afford downtime while waiting on a fix.

- A significant number of reviewers (26%) highlight integrations with other tools in a typical MSP stack, which can help avoid a second login or manual data transfer.

- Some reviewers (21%) mention value for money as a recurring theme for teams, comparing it against pricier alternatives.

**What users dislike about Zoho Assist**

The picture is less positive on feature completeness, especially compared with larger competitors.

- Missing features are a recurring theme, most often tied to advanced session controls, raised by about one in six reviewers (18%).

- Some reviewers (9%) point to issues in the interface.

- A handful of reviewers (8%) mention learning curves for teams new to the unattended-access setup, specifically.

**What a verified Capterra reviewer says**

"Zoho Assist has everything I need to connect to my clients securely and remotely. It has multifactor authentication built in and is web-based, so I can access it from anywhere. Connecting is always fast, even on slower networks, on my phone or tablets. The unattended access feature is perfect for those devices I know I'll need to connect to regularly."

Tommy R., Network Admin, Information Technology and Services

_**Bottom line:**_ _Zoho Assist is a very good choice for budget-conscious MSPs or IT teams that want to prioritize their remote support reach without sacrificing reliability. This is also a top choice for any teams already using other products within Zoho’s ecosystem._

## 3\. Cove Data Protection: Best for MSP-Native Backup and Disaster Recovery

_Cove Data Protection's dashboard shows backup completion, device counts, and storage across every client from a single screen. (Source: Capterra)_

[Cove Data Protection](https://www.capterra.com/p/163343/Backup-and-Recovery/) is a standout choice on this list for backup and disaster recovery. It is the only product featured on this list that is purpose-built for this task, and that comes across especially to reviewers when looking at its monitoring and reporting capabilities.

It offers a multi-tenant dashboard, which enables MSPs working across a broader mix of client environments to view device counts, backup completion, and storage in one place. This avoids the complication of having to maintain multiple customer-specific consoles.

This amounts to real-time savings in day-to-day effort, as noted in several reviews. This also pairs with other benefits, such as positive feedback about its customer support.

**Key features**

- Cloud-native, image-based backup with deduplication to cut redundant storage

- Recovery for bare-metal, virtual machine, and Microsoft 365 environments

- Unified, multi-tenant dashboard across all managed clients

- Immutable, isolated backups with mandatory multi-factor authentication

**What users like about Cove Data Protection**

Reviewers lead with how much visibility the dashboard gives them across every client they manage.

- Reporting and dashboards are practical for MSPs juggling multiple client environments at once, since a single screen shows backup status for all clients. Many reviewers (35%) call this out specifically.

- Time saved on day-to-day backup management often comes up, too, raised by about one in six reviewers (16%).

- Customer support comes up often for teams that need help during a restore, raised by about one in six reviewers (15%).

**What users dislike about Cove Data Protection**

Feedback is more mixed on how long it takes to get comfortable with the platform's multi-tenant setup.

- A learning curve is the most common complaint, tied to getting comfortable with multi-tenant backup management, raised by about one in six reviewers (12%).

- Some reviewers, about one in six, point to rough edges in the interface (11%).

- Pricing and scalability also come up as some reviewers (8%) weigh costs against the number of clients or the amount of storage they manage.

**What a verified Capterra reviewer says**

"We love how easy it is to setup and get a new backup running for a customer and how the monitoring helps free up our technicians to work on other tasks. The restore process is very easy from restoring a single file to an entire server. The value we get from Cove is unmatched by their competitors."

Justin H., President and Owner, Computer Networking

_**Bottom line:**_ _Cove Data Protection is a solid choice to managing backups and disaster recovery across multiple clients. By making it possible to view everything in one place, it can prove to simplify and save time for MSPs with smaller teams but wider client bases._

## 4\. TeamViewer ONE: Best for the Most Widely Reviewed Remote Support in the Category

_TeamViewer ONE's health dashboard surfaces device health scores and a combined issues list across an MSP's managed endpoints. (Source: Capterra)_

[TeamViewer ONE](https://www.capterra.com/p/194565/TeamViewer/) is one of the most recognized products on this list among reviewers and currently tops The Capterra MSP Shortlist. Where it succeeds most is in its ability to manage remote access, device monitoring, and patch management in a single platform.

This is quite different from other products listed so far, which provide superior coverage in one area but may lack overall versatility. This makes TeamViewer worth considering if you need a wider range of functionality.

It also performs well among reviewers for its ability to speed up the handling of urgent issues and to integrate with other tools. However, this width of coverage comes with a literal cost, of course. Reviewers mention price as a factor, especially as companies scale. This is worth weighing up when considering it as an option, although for organizations wanting to keep more functionality in one platform, the investment is worthwhile.

#### Device Compatibilty

**Key features**

- Cross-device remote access and support across desktop and mobile

- Quick connection via partner ID, no complex setup for the end user

- Remote monitoring and management alongside asset and patch management

- Broad platform support across Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android

**What users like about TeamViewer ONE**

Reviewers most often point to how quickly they can get connected to a client's device when something needs fixing.

- Fast, simple connections are practical for support teams handling urgent client issues, since there's little setup on the client's end. Most reviewers who mention it (42%) say it's straightforward to use.

- Customer support is a standout here relative to other tools on this list. Most reviewers who mention it (41%) call it out specifically.

- Integrations with other tools in an MSP's stack are useful for avoiding duplicate work. Many reviewers (26%) mention it.

**What users dislike about TeamViewer ONE**

Cost is where the reviews get more mixed, especially as teams add endpoints or technicians.

- Pricing and scalability are recurring concerns as MSPs grow their endpoint count, raised by about one in six reviewers (15%), more than any other product on this list.

- Some reviewers (9%) point to friction and difficulties in the interface.

- A handful of reviewers (7%) mention a learning curve for the platform's broader feature set.

**What a verified Capterra reviewer says**

"Teamviewer allows us to quickly and securely connect to another device and take control. We can provide quick remote support to our clients and users. It is very easy to set up and is available for all devices and I can quickly enter my partner's ID and get access to their devices."

David G., Owner, Computer Software

_**Bottom line:**_ _TeamViewer One is a good option for teams that want a broader range of functionality in a single tool. This comes with a price, but it is also the most widely reviewed tool for remote support, with genuine name recognition._

## 5\. N-sight RMM: Best RMM for Growing MSPs

_N-sight RMM's dashboard shows workstation status, device counts, and reboot needs across all managed clients and sites. (Source: Capterra)_

[N-sight RMM](https://www.capterra.com/p/163344/N-sight/) is another platform that prioritizes RMM functionality. It, however, stands out more as an option for SMBs scaling up their managed endpoint base.

Like Teamviewer it covers RMM and patch management, providing a single view of every managed device. It also bundles in vulnerability management as well as attended and unattended remote access, that can flag when IT staff need to step in.

It also receives very high recognition for its ease of use and ability to set up and run, which make it a worthy consideration for smaller MSPs switching from other systems, to scale their business further.

#### Trial/Free Version

**Key features**

- 24/7 monitoring and alerting across all managed endpoints

- Single-pane-of-glass visibility into device status

- Automated patch management with built-in vulnerability scanning

- Attended and unattended remote access with file transfer

**What users like about N-sight RMM**

The theme that comes up most for N-sight RMM is how quickly a new client's environment gets onboarded and monitored.

- Ease of use and setup is practical for growing MSPs onboarding new client environments regularly, since there's little ramp-up time. Most reviewers who mention it (50%) say it's straightforward.

- Feature depth is useful for teams that want monitoring, patching, and remote access without adding separate tools. Many reviewers (24%) mention it.

- Time saved on day-to-day management comes up often, too, raised by about one in six reviewers (19%).

**What users dislike about N-sight RMM**

Reviewers are more split on how complete the feature set feels for more specialized use cases.

- Missing features are the most common complaint. Many (20%) reviewers raise the point, tying it to specific integrations or advanced controls.

- A learning curve shows up for teams new to the platform's broader toolset, reported by about 1 in 6 reviewers (13%).

- Some reviewers, about one in six, point to outdated designs or issues in the interface (11%).

**What a verified Capterra reviewer says**

"N-sight brings together monitoring, alerting, and remote support in one platform. It gives us a clear, real-time overview of all client devices, and the automation features save a lot of manual effort. Remote access is fast and reliable, which is essential for delivering responsive support."

Thane R., Director, Information Technology and Services

_**Bottom line:**_ _N-sight RMM is a very strong choice for MSPs looking for a dependable RMM platform that is quick and easy to learn. The combination of multiple functions make it worthwhile for teams that are starting to outgrow smaller or a complex web of overlapping systems that need to make the change fast._

## 6\. N-central: Best RMM for MSPs Managing Larger, More Complex Client Bases

_N-central's device management screen shows a patch summary, active issues, and CPU and memory utilization for a monitored endpoint. (Source: Capterra)_

[N-central](https://www.capterra.com/p/13803/N-central/) is unique on this list as the option for smaller MSPs managing more expansive or complex client environments. These higher demands require a much deeper features set which is where N-central really stands out compared to the tools looked at so far.

A key area of differentiation is its automation builder. This allows technical teams manage tasks such as scripting their own patching, alerting or remediation workflows. This is useful for teams that have stayed on the smaller side but have grown beyond templated, rigid workflows found in other software.

There is, unfortunately, a tradeoff from the deeper complexity: a higher learning curve compared to others. This needn’t be an issue for teams that need more bespoke or original workflows, although it is worth considering when first adopting the platform. However, there are many users who find that, once adopted, the system can prove to be a very practical and functional tool.

#### Trial/Free Version

- Free Trial

#### Device Compatibilty

**Key features**

- Drag-and-drop automation builder with custom PowerShell scripting support

- Customizable patching and alerting rules

- Scheduled and on-demand reporting

- Quick remote technical access for hands-on support

**What users like about N-central**

What comes up most for N-central is how much you can customize once you're past the initial setup.

- Feature depth is practical for MSPs managing complex, varied client environments, since there's rarely a workflow it can't be configured to handle. Many reviewers (28%) mention it.

- Time saved through automation is a recurring theme (mentioned by 26% of reviewers) once workflows are built out.

- Ease of use and setup is a recurring theme, too. 26% of users say the difficulty curve flattens out once past the platform's steeper start.

**What users dislike about N-central**

Feedback is more mixed on how long it takes to get comfortable with everything the platform can do.

- A learning curve is the most common complaint, tied to the platform's depth and customization options. Many reviewers (22%) raise it.

- Some reviewers, about one in six, point to dealing with navigational difficulties or information density in the interface (19%).

- A smaller number of reviewers mention accuracy concerns with specific alerts or reports.

**What a verified Capterra reviewer says**

"Quick view of alerts across all client locations is a big time saver. Using the dashboard view and the additional on-demand reports, we can speak knowledgeably with short notice about a client's assets and environment. The scheduled reports keep clients informed as well. N-Central provides quick access to client systems for the delivery or remote technical support."

Denase H., President, Computer Networking

_**Bottom line:**_ _N-Central occupies a unique position on this list, providing smaller MSPs working with bigger more complex client infrastructures with a much deeper toolset. There is a steeper learning curve upfront but once managed, it can prove highly useful for engineers needing more customizable workflows._

## **What to look for in MSP software**

When you’re comparing MSP software as a smaller business, there are a few things you’ll need to weigh up. Depending on your size and client base requirements can vary hugely.

As you consider the choices available, some of the points to plan around include:

- **Deployment models:** Cloud-hosting is common for MSP tools, due to the remote access requirements. It can help to decide if you need agents on every endpoint or not, this will need to temper against user and endpoint limits some products may apply.

- **Pricing structure:** There are few pricing models in play for MSPs software. Some are priced per endpoint, while others limit technician seats. Choosing between the two will ultimately come down to whether your team size or client networks necessitates one vs the other.

- **Integration infrastructure:** If you’re deploying a new RMM or backup tool, it needs to be able to function with other existing tools you use to manage IT infrastructure.

- **Toolset required:** MSP covers a wide range of functionality, therefore understanding the gap you’re trying to fill, whether it is RMM, remote access, PSA or documentation is important.

A quick way to choose is to list the two or three capabilities you're missing right now, then compare tools against that specific gap. If cost is the deciding factor, Capterra's [free MSP software filter](https://www.capterra.com/msp-software/s/free/) is a reasonable place to start.

## Can one tool handle RMM, PSA, and backup? Here's what I found comparing these 6 tools

Each tool on this list focuses on a specialization needed by MSP professionals. Products used by smaller companies can do multiple but very often aren’t all-in-one platforms.

| Tool type | Products on this list |
| --- | --- |
| RMM | Action1, N-sight RMM, N-central |
| Remote access and support | Zoho Assist, TeamViewer ONE |
| Backup and disaster recovery | Cove Data Protection |

It’s common for small MSPs to layer tools for specific use cases, therefore making the right choice is important when building a new tech stack or upgrading parts of an existing one. Interconnectivity becomes especially important and this is a common buyer concern.

For example, 37% of software buyers in Capterra’s 2026 Software Buying Trends survey highlight compatibility with existing systems as a top challenge when planning new purchases. MSP tools often need to work well with other systems, and that’s why picking tools with good integration reliability and connectivity matters just as much as picking the best tool for one task in its own right.

## Frequently asked questions

What is MSP software used for?

MSP software, sometimes called MSP management software, lets managed service providers remotely manage clients' IT from a single dashboard rather than visiting each site in person. That typically covers remote monitoring, remote access and support, backup and recovery, and issue management.

How much does MSP software cost?

Most MSP software is priced monthly, and a typical entry-level plan runs around $23 per month, with more advanced tiers around $97 per month, according to [Capterra's MSP software category page](https://www.capterra.com/msp-software/). Entry-level plans usually cover ticketing, remote monitoring, and basic recovery; higher tiers add security management, service automation, and client reporting.

What's the difference between RMM and PSA software?

RMM (remote monitoring and management) software monitors and manages client devices remotely, handling tasks such as patching, alerting, and endpoint health. PSA (professional services automation) software handles the business side of running an MSP: ticketing, billing, and service operations. This list leans toward RMM and remote-access tools rather than PSA, since none of the highest-rated PSA-focused products cleared this list's raised review threshold.

Is there free MSP software?

Yes. Action1 offers a free tier covering your first 200 endpoints with no feature limitations, and you can browse other [free and freemium MSP tools](https://www.capterra.com/msp-software/s/free/) on Capterra.

What's the difference between an MSP and MSP software?

An MSP (managed service provider) is a company you hire to manage your IT. MSP software is the toolset an MSP uses internally to deliver that service, monitor devices, back up data, and manage tickets across its client base. If you're looking to hire a provider rather than buy a tool, that's a different search entirely.

Do MSPs need separate documentation software?

For most MSPs, yes. It’s common to pair a dedicated documentation tool alongside whatever RMM, PSA, or backup software they run.

Is MSP software worth it for a small or growing MSP?

Yes, once you're supporting more than a handful of clients. Finding the best MSP software for your team pays off through the time-saving features that show up repeatedly in the review data above, faster patching, fewer manual checks, one dashboard instead of several, and those tend to add up quickly once you're managing more devices than you can track by hand.

Reviews were assessed from August 2024 to August 2026. All ratings and review counts reflect data as of the time of publication. Pricing was verified against official vendor pricing pages in September 2026.

To be included in this list, each product had to:

1. Be included on Capterra's Managed Service Providers (MSP) Software Shortlist, or, for the one product sourced from the broader category directory, meet the same rating and review thresholds and pass a separate category-fit confirmation against the vendor's own site.

2. Have a minimum of 100 verified Capterra reviews from small and midsize business reviewers (up to 200 employees) in the last two years.

3. Have an overall rating of 4.0 or above based on reviews from that same SMB segment in the last two years.

4. Fit Capterra's criteria for MSP software, possessing remote monitoring and management, backup and recovery, and issue management capabilities (no product had to deliver all three itself, since specializing in one layer is normal for this category).

To build the list:

- I analyzed 2,527 verified Capterra reviews from small and midsize business reviewers, of MSP software.

- Reviews were assessed on four dimensions: overall rating, ease of use, functionality, and customer support.

- Pricing was verified against vendor websites in September 2026.

Survey data cited in this article is from Capterra's 2026 Software Buying Trends survey, conducted online in August 2025 among 3,385 respondents in Australia (n=281), Brazil (n=278), Canada (n=293), France (n=283), Germany (n=279), India (n=260), Italy (n=263), Mexico (n=288), Spain (n=273), the U.K. (n=299), and the U.S. (n=588), at businesses across multiple industries, ages (1 year in business or longer), and sizes (5 or more employees). Business sizes represented in the survey include 1,676 small (5-249 full-time employees), 822 midsize (250-999), and 887 enterprise (1,000+). The goal of this study was to understand the timelines, organizational challenges, research behaviors, and adoption processes of business software buyers. Respondents were screened to ensure their involvement in business software purchasing decisions.
