**TL;DR:** _In this article, I analyzed 45 board management software products on Capterra that hold 1,047 verified reviews, narrowing it down to my top 5 picks, evaluated on verified security credentials, review-backed ratings, and core board management features_.

If you've ever had to explain to an auditor why your secure board portal software doesn't support single sign-on, you already know that ease of use isn't the bar that matters most here. Choosing [board management software](https://www.capterra.com/board-management-software/) is different for compliance and governance teams: the choice has to hold up when a board, an auditor, or a regulator starts asking hard questions about security.

If you're an Executive Assistant, Corporate Secretary, Governance Officer, or Director or CFO who has to recommend or approve a board portal and then defend that choice, this list is built around exactly that task.

This article covers what to look for in board management software's security and compliance credentials, plus a side-by-side look at all five finalists' security certifications, attestations, and compliance claims verified directly on each vendor's own website. It also covers where two of the five still ask you to pay more for a security feature you might assume comes standard.

The tools I've picked are listed in ranking order based on their overall score from reviewers on Capterra over the last two years. "Best for" here means how each platform's own reviewers rate it on overall satisfaction, cross-checked against the security credentials and features I verified directly on each vendor's own website.

## Top picks at a glance

| Product | Best for | Overall rating over last two years | \# reviews in last two years | Starting price |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Aprio | All-inclusive pricing with no feature tiers | 4.81 | 26 | Contact vendor |
| OnBoard | Privacy-management certification | 4.68 | 40 | Contact vendor |
| Convene | Granular in-product security controls | 4.66 | 59 | Contact vendor |
| Diligent Boards | The broadest published security credentials | 4.58 | 80 | Contact vendor |
| BoardEffect | SSO and audit logging in the entry plan | 4.12 | 69 | Contact vendor |

_Ratings and review counts reflect verified Board Management software reviews in our dataset. Pricing was checked on each vendor's official website in September 2026; none published a numerical starting price, so all five are listed as "Contact vendor."_

Here's what each of the five publishes about its own security credentials, and where each one publishes it.

| Product | Security credentials it publishes | Where it publishes them | Security features restricted by tier? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Aprio | SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, and GDPR | Its own trust center | No, Aprio publishes no tiers at all |
| OnBoard | ISO 27001, ISO 27701, SOC 2, CSA STAR Level 1, HIPAA, GDPR, and HECVAT | Its own trust center | Yes, single sign-on is not on the entry plan; it's a paid add-on on the middle tier, or included in the top tier |
| Convene | GDPR | Its security-features page; no trust center.<br>The ISO and SOC standards named on that page belong to its cloud hosting facilities, not to Convene | Yes, audit trails and advanced security features start at the Standard tier |
| Diligent Boards | ISO/IEC 27001 (with a Statement of Applicability), ISO/IEC 27017, ISO/IEC 27018, SOC 1, SOC 2;, TX-RAMP, IRAP; HIPAA, CCPA, GDPR, and VPAT | Its own product trust center | Not disclosed publicly |
| BoardEffect | ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 27017, ISO/IEC 27018, ISO 27001 Statement of Applicability, SOC 1, SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR, and VPAT | Its own product trust center | No, single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, and audit logging are all in the entry Pro tier |

_Credentials were read directly from each vendor's own security pages and trust centers in September 2026. Counts reflect what each vendor publishes, not an independent audit of its security posture._

## How I picked this list

I started with Capterra's own [Shortlist for Board Management Software](https://www.capterra.com/board-management-software/#shortlist) and applied the following criteria to every product on it:

- Carry a minimum overall rating of 4.0 and at least 20 verified reviews in the last two years.

- Fit Capterra's criteria for Board Management software, with real support for collaboration, meeting management, and minutes management.

- Publish at least one issued security certification, a current examination or attestation report, or an explicit regulatory-compliance claim, such as an ISO 27001 certification, a SOC 2 Type II attestation, or GDPR or HIPAA compliance, attributed to the product itself on the vendor's own website.

- Be fully available for users in the United States, which means it has to be the actual main product described in the vendor website, not a different, narrower product sold under the same name for the U.S. region.

Four shortlisted tools cleared every bar. To fill the remaining spot, I screened the rest of the Board Management Software category on Capterra against the same rating and review requirements. In total, that's the entire category: 45 products holding 1,047 verified reviews. The highest-rated product outside the Shortlist that met every requirement took the last place on the list.

After that, I ranked the five qualifying tools by their overall rating over the past two years, breaking ties by review count.

## 1\. Aprio: Best for all-inclusive pricing with no feature tiers

_Aprio's dashboard, showing the meeting calendar, upcoming meetings, and actions in one view. (Source: Capterra product page, captured September 2026.)_

[Aprio](https://www.capterra.com/p/172971/Aprio/) is the highest-rated pick on this list, 4.81 out of 5, and the only one in this list that publishes no tier structure at all. Its own pricing page states there's no "lite" version and no add-ons: every feature comes in one pay-per-user plan. It's board management software with portal functionality, covering meeting management, minutes, task management, voting and approvals, and document collaboration, and it's used by credit unions, banks, and corporations in Canada and the US.

Because Aprio doesn't split features across tiers, its security features come standard for every buyer rather than being reserved for a higher-priced plan.

#### Trial/Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

**Key features**

- Single sign-on (SSO), multi-factor authentication (MFA), and audit and login activity reports, included in every plan

- Granular role-based permissions

- Agenda Builder and Minutes builder for meeting prep and board minutes

- Central document library with secure collaboration

- Task management, plus board voting and e-signatures

Aprio's [trust center](https://trust.aprioboardportal.com) lists a SOC 2 Type II attestation report, along with HIPAA and GDPR compliance. [Its website](https://aprioboardportal.com/features/board-portal-security/) separately states ISO 27001 certification.

**What users like about Aprio**

Aprio's reviewers raise its customer support distinctively often.

- The interface is simple enough that board liaisons don't need much training to get a board up and running. Most reviewers who mention it (77%) point to how quickly they got comfortable with day-to-day use.

- Aprio's support team responds quickly when something needs troubleshooting, which matters when an admin is prepping for a live board meeting. 54% of the reviewers who quote it single out the support experience specifically.

- A small number of reviewers highlight feeling reassured by Aprio's security when handling sensitive board documents.

**What users dislike about Aprio**

A couple of reviewers cite occasional friction with the mobile experience, app navigation, and slow document previews, but with so few mentions, it doesn't yet add up to a clear pattern.

**What a verified Capterra reviewer says**

"Aprio is very user friendly from an Admin perspective, and our Board Members took to it right away. A secure cloud-based platform that is not overwhelming for Directors."

Lisa W., Executive Assistant, Utilities

_**Bottom line:**_ _Aprio is best for buyers who want every feature in one plan, with no tier to upgrade to and nothing held back, single sign-on included._

## 2\. OnBoard: Best for privacy-management certification

_OnBoard's meeting calendar, filtered by committee group. (Source: Capterra product page, captured September 2026.)_

[OnBoard](https://www.capterra.com/p/179015/OnBoard-Board-Portal/) is a board management software with portal functionality built for meeting prep, minutes, and board communications, used across corporate, nonprofit, and higher-education boards.

#### Trial/Free Version

- Free Trial
- Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

**Key features**

- Agenda Builder for drag-and-drop meeting agendas

- Minutes Builder, built directly into the agenda view

- Voting and approvals workflows

- Secure Messenger for board communications

- Meeting Analytics and Director Engagement tracking

- Single sign-on via Okta or Azure AD, restricted by tier

OnBoard's [trust center](https://trust.onboardmeetings.com/Trust_Center) lists six items under "Audits and Certifications": ISO 27001, ISO 27701, a SOC 2 attestation report, CSA STAR Level 1, and HIPAA and GDPR compliance documentation. It also lists a HECVAT self-assessment in a separate "Questionnaires" category.

**What users like about OnBoard**

The clearest signal in OnBoard's reviews is how much it speeds up meeting prep and coordination.

- Preparing and running board and committee meetings takes less coordination than reviewers expected, which matters for liaisons juggling multiple committees at once. More than half of reviewers who highlight it (57%) point to meeting and board efficiency specifically.

- The interface is straightforward enough that new board members get comfortable quickly. 55% of reviewers who mention it say it took little time to learn.

- OnBoard's support team comes up as a strength for organizations that need help during setup.

**What users dislike about OnBoard**

The most distinctive complaint about OnBoard is what its base plan leaves out, not how hard it is to learn.

- A learning curve comes up for some new users getting oriented to the platform's full feature set.

- Some reviewers note missing features they expected the platform to include.

**What a verified Capterra reviewer says**

"We've used OnBoard to keep our board aligned in a very practical way. It does a nice job of document sharing and meeting coordination and the secure access for members ensures confidentiality."

Youssef Z., Head of Department, Higher Education

_**Bottom line:**_ _OnBoard is best for organizations whose review process asks specifically about privacy management, provided you don't need a single sign-on on the entry plan. If you want to add SSO you get it as an add-on in the Premium plan, or have it included in the Ultimate plan. Minutes Builder is also restricted above the entry tier._

## 3\. Convene: Best for granular in-product security controls

_Convene's dashboard, showing the document library and review rooms alongside upcoming board actions. (Source: Capterra product page, captured September 2026.)_

[Convene](https://www.capterra.com/p/133609/Convene/) has a granular security feature set: biometric multi-factor authentication, document watermarking and rights management, and device jailbreak detection. It's board management software with portal functionality for meetings, resolutions, and document review, built for organizations that want granular control over who can see, print, or forward a board document.

#### Trial/Free Version

- Free Trial
- Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

**Key features**

- SAML single sign-on and biometric multi-factor authentication

- Audit trail and user activity logs

- Real-time meeting minutes with automatic syncing

- Review Rooms for document approvals and e-signatures

- Convene AI for automated meeting documentation

Convene's [security features page](https://azeusconvene.com/security-features) states that its data-processing procedures comply with GDPR, overseen by a named Data Protection Officer. The same page lists ISO 9001, ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, and AICPA SOC reports under a "Certifications" heading; the page attributes these to Convene's cloud hosting facilities, not to Convene itself. Convene doesn't publish its own trust center.

**What users like about Convene**

Security and compliance confidence is a distinctive theme among Convene's reviewers.

- Preparing and running meetings takes less coordination once a board is set up in Convene. 53% of reviewers who mention it point to meeting and board efficiency.

- 25% of reviewers say the platform is straightforward to use.

- Reviewers handling sensitive board-level documents mention feeling reassured by Convene's security controls. 24% of reviewers raise security and compliance confidence specifically.

**What users dislike about Convene**

The most distinctive complaint about Convene is its cost as a board grows, not how hard it is to learn.

- The learning curve comes up as a challenge for some new users.

- Pricing and scalability come up as boards grow past their starting size. This has been raised by 12% of its reviewers.

**What a verified Capterra reviewer says**

"The absolute best feature is its robust security and granular access controls. For an organization handling highly sensitive board-level documents, the platform's end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication, and precise permission settings provide excellent governance."

Akansha C., Infra Managed Service Analyst, Information Technology and Services

_**Bottom line:**_ _Convene is best for organizations that want granular in-product security controls and can budget for the tier that carries them. Reports and audit trails, along with advanced security features, require the Standard tier or higher; the entry Lite tier carries only a meetings module plus secure hosting and permission-based access._

## 4\. Diligent Boards: Best for the broadest published security credentials

_Diligent Boards' home screen, with secure file sharing and questionnaires listed alongside current board books. (Source: Capterra product page, captured September 2026.)_

[Diligent Boards](https://www.capterra.com/p/149069/Diligent-Boards/) publishes 12 documented security credentials, including government cloud authorizations. It's board management software with portal functionality for board books, meeting materials, minutes, and director communications, built for organizations that need to satisfy a wide range of security reviews at once.

#### Trial/Free Version

- Free Trial
- Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

**Key features**

- Smart Book Builder for board book preparation

- Smart Minutes for meeting minutes

- Action Tracker for follow-up items

- Board Messaging for secure director communication

- Fast Approvals with e-signature and audit logs

- Single sign-on (SAML 2.0) and audit trail/activity logging

Diligent publishes a per-product [trust center](https://trust.diligent.com/?product=boards), and the Boards view lists 12 items: ISO/IEC 27001 (with a Statement of Applicability), ISO/IEC 27017 and ISO/IEC 27018 certifications, SOC 1 and SOC 2 attestation reports, TX-RAMP and IRAP government cloud authorizations, HIPAA, CCPA, and GDPR compliance claims, and a VPAT. It also lists a Boards-specific security overview and penetration test report, plus CAIQ, HECVAT Full, and SIG Core self-assessments.

**What users like about Diligent Boards**

Reviewer confidence in its security is a notable theme in Diligent Boards' reviews.

- The interface is straightforward enough for a large share of users to get comfortable quickly. Over half of reviewers who mention it point to ease of use and setup.

- Meeting and board efficiency comes up as a real benefit for coordinating materials and schedules. A recurring theme, raised by 19% of reviewers.

- Reviewers handling sensitive documents mention feeling confident in Diligent Boards' security. A topic quoted by 15% of reviewers.

**What users dislike about Diligent Boards**

The most distinctive complaint about Diligent Boards is what its base plan leaves out, not how hard it is to learn.

- Some reviewers note missing features they expected the platform to include.

- A learning curve comes up for a few new users.

**What a verified Capterra reviewer says**

"The learning modules have demonstrated the ease and confidence of safeguarding the organization's sensitive documents from evolving threats such as cyberattacks. It also provides steps for evaluation in improvements and adopting strategies to increase productivity."

Jennifer P., Sr. Auditor, Insurance

_**Bottom line:**_ _Diligent Boards is best for buyers who have to satisfy a wide range of security reviews as it publishes 12 credentials. Note that Diligent Boards' public pages don't state whether any security feature is restricted by tier._

## 5\. BoardEffect: Best for SSO and audit logging in the entry plan

_BoardEffect's home screen, showing upcoming board meetings next to minutes and approvals navigation. (Source: Capterra product page, captured September 2026.)_

[BoardEffect](https://www.capterra.com/p/151082/BoardEffect/) publishes nine security credentials clearly scoped to it. Single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, and audit logging all come in its entry tier rather than an upgrade. It's board management software with portal functionality for board packets, minutes, messaging, and approvals, built by Diligent for nonprofit and mission-driven boards in particular.

#### Trial/Free Version

- Free Trial
- Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

**Key features**

- AI-assisted agendas and meeting summaries

- Board Books & Materials, kept up to date and shared digitally

- Workflow management for approvals and follow-ups

- Secure Workspaces for committees and working groups

- Single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, and an Audit Log, all in the entry "Pro" tier

BoardEffect's own product [trust center](https://trust.diligent.com/?product=boardeffect) lists 9 compliance items: ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 27017:2015, and ISO/IEC 27018:2019 certifications (held by Diligent's information security management system), an ISO 27001 Statement of Applicability, SOC 1 and SOC 2 attestation reports, HIPAA, GDPR, and a VPAT.

**What users like about BoardEffect**

Meeting and board efficiency is the more distinctive theme in BoardEffect's reviews, also ease of use gets mentioned.

- Coordinating meetings and board communications takes less back-and-forth once a board is set up. 39% of reviewers quote meeting and board efficiency.

- The interface is straightforward enough for most users to get comfortable with quickly.

- Reviewers handling sensitive board documents mention feeling confident in BoardEffect's security.

**What users dislike about BoardEffect**

BoardEffect has one theme that is a pattern across its reviewers, which is also the most common in this board management list.

- 14% of the users mention that the learning curve comes up for some new users.

**What a verified Capterra reviewer says**

"One place for all our board volunteers to receive information with the highest level of security that we found when searching for a board platform. I love being able to add links in the library and not just documents."

Julia T., VP, CHRO, Banking

_**Bottom line:**_ _BoardEffect is best for buyers who need single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, and audit logging without an upgrade, plus documented security credentials on file. Its website shows these security features included at the entry Pro tier. Note that the entry Pro tier is limited to one board (unlimited boards require the Plus tier), and Minutes is a Plus-only feature._

## How to choose secure board portal software for your organization

The right secure board portal software depends less on brand than on which specific security credentials and features your own auditors, regulators, or board actually require. A short checklist helps before you commit to any product, whether or not it's on this list:

- Ask whether each certification a vendor claims is currently issued, not lapsed or still in progress.

- Ask whether an attestation report such as SOC 2 is current, since these expire and get reissued periodically.

- Ask whether a regulatory-compliance claim, such as GDPR or HIPAA, is explicitly self-attributed by the vendor rather than just referenced, or attributed to a cloud hosting provider instead of the product itself.

- Confirm which security features, such as single sign-on or audit trails, are included in the base tier versus gated behind an upgrade.

- Check whether the vendor's own trust center or security page is internally consistent, and whether it's scoped to the exact product you're buying rather than a sibling product from the same company.

If your organization also needs governance tools beyond the boardroom itself, such as entity and subsidiary management, it's worth a look at [company secretarial software](https://www.capterra.com/company-secretarial-software/) as an adjacent category. If budget is the deciding factor, Capterra's [free board management tools](https://www.capterra.com/board-management-software/s/free/) filter is a reasonable starting point.

## Frequently asked questions

What is a board portal, and what does board management software do?

A board portal is secure, cloud-based board management software that centralizes the tasks around running a board, instead of relying on email and printed board books. It handles building and distributing meeting agendas and materials, capturing and approving minutes, managing votes and e-signatures, and storing governance documents securely between meetings. Most board portals also add security features, such as encryption and access controls, that general file-sharing tools don't, and some add compliance tracking, board self-assessments, and director communication tools.

How much does board management software cost?

Pricing across Capterra's board management software category typically runs from about $44 a month at the entry level to around $80 a month for mid-tier plans, up to roughly $334 a month for the most feature-rich options. These figures come from [Capterra's board management pricing guide](https://www.capterra.com/board-management-software/#board-management-software-pricing). None of the five products on this list publish a number themselves: all five require contacting the vendor directly for a quote.

Is there free board management software available?

Some board management products offer a free plan or a free trial, though none of the five picks on this list currently do. Capterra's [free board management tools](https://www.capterra.com/board-management-software/s/free/) filter is a good starting point if budget is your main constraint.

Which board portal is the most secure?

There's no single answer, because "most secure" depends on which specific certifications, attestations, or in-product controls your own auditors or regulators require when evaluating secure board portal software. The security-credential comparison table earlier in this article lays out what each of the five publishes and where; each product's own section states its security-tier gating in detail, and the two FAQ entries below cover what to check before you buy.

What compliance certifications should a board portal have?

Look for an issued security certification such as ISO 27001, a current examination or attestation report such as a SOC 2 Type II, and explicit regulatory-compliance claims such as GDPR or HIPAA. These are three different kinds of evidence: SOC 2 is an attestation, not a certification, and HIPAA has no official certifying body. Ask whether each certification is currently issued, each attestation report is current, and each regulatory claim is explicitly self-attributed, not merely referenced or attributed to a cloud host.

What security features should a board portal have?

A board portal should include single sign-on (SSO), multi-factor authentication (MFA), an audit trail or activity log, and encryption both at rest and in transit. Two of the five products on this list, OnBoard and Convene, restrict one of these features to a higher-priced tier, so check which are included in the base plan before you buy.

Reviews were assessed from August 2024 to August 2026. All ratings and review counts reflect data as of the time of publication. Pricing was verified against official vendor pricing pages in September 2026.

To be included in this list, each product had to:

1. Be included on Capterra's Shortlist for Board Management Software, or, if not, be the highest-rated product in Capterra's full Board Management Software category that met every other criterion below.

2. Carry a minimum overall rating of 4.0 and at least 20 verified Capterra reviews in the trailing two years.

3. Fit Capterra's criteria for Board Management software, with real support for collaboration, meeting management, and minutes management.

4. Publish at least one issued security certification, a current examination or attestation report, or an explicit regulatory-compliance claim, such as an ISO 27001 certification, a SOC 2 Type II attestation, or GDPR or HIPAA compliance, attributed to the product itself on the vendor's own website rather than to the company's cloud hosting provider or to a different product from the same vendor.

5. Be fully available for users in the United States, which means it has to be the actual main product described in the vendor website, not a different, narrower product sold under the same name for the U.S. region.

To build this list:

- I analyzed all 45 products in Capterra's Board Management Software category, which hold 1,047 verified reviews between them, narrowing the list to the 5 products here.

- I then analyzed the 274 verified reviews across those 5 products for recurring patterns in what users like and dislike.

Reviews were assessed on 5 dimensions: overall rating, ease of use, functionality, customer support, and value for money. Separately, and specific to this article, each vendor's own website and trust center was checked for the security certifications, attestation reports, and regulatory-compliance claims it publishes, and for whether any security feature is restricted to a higher tier.

Pricing was verified against each vendor's own website in September 2026. None of the five vendors publishes a numerical starting price; all require contacting the vendor directly for a quote.
