Application development involves lengthy development cycles and significant resources for testing and debugging. [Application development software](https://www.capterra.com/application-development-software/) automates various aspects of the development process—from designing and coding to usability testing and delivery—to help software developers design, build, test, and maintain applications. It also includes collaboration features to help share media files, communicate across teams, and manage joint work.

However, selecting the right software depends on understanding the different software features and functionality. To help you with that, we’ve identified five key application development software features based on the ratings given by verified software users. We’ve also included the highest-rated software for each feature.

## 1\. Task management

The task management feature helps software development teams organize, prioritize, and track the progress of their work. It typically involves creating tasks, assigning them to team members, setting deadlines, and monitoring task status through various stages of completion.

Task management includes task dependencies, which help identify and manage the relationships between different project tasks. It also provides a unified dashboard for project discussions, file sharing, stakeholder comments and notes, and real-time task progress updates.

### What business problems does task management solve?

The task management feature of app development software helps address the following challenges:

- **Ineffective task organization:** Application development projects involve coding, testing, debugging, and documentation tasks. Without a structured system, these tasks can become disorganized, leading to missed deadlines or delays. The task management feature provides a central hub for creating, assigning, and prioritizing tasks. It allows application developers to track task progress, ensure accountability, and simplify team communication. This centralized approach minimizes confusion, reduces overlap in work, and ensures all team members are aligned with project goals and timelines.

- **Suboptimal resource allocation:** Assigning tasks without considering workload or skillset can lead to inefficiencies in application development. The task management feature allows team managers to assess staff availability and expertise to delegate tasks strategically and optimize resource allocation. Managers can also use availability calendars and skillset tagging to ensure no team member is overburdened and resources are evenly distributed. For example, back-end tasks get assigned to developers with expertise in server-side programming, while front-end tasks get allocated to those skilled in client-side scripting.

- **Fractured communications:** Miscommunication between software development team members can lead to confusion and rework. The task management feature improves communication by providing a unified dashboard for discussions, file sharing, and real-time updates on task progress. It includes features for commenting, tagging team members, and sharing updates. Instead of relying on scattered emails or messages, all relevant information is stored in one place, making it easier to track discussions and decisions. Team members can use @mentions to notify other members about a task update or use comment threads to keep discussions focused on a particular task.

### How users benefit from task management

These review excerpts from software reviewers of the task management feature describe how it helps them:

_“Admins are able to delegate tasks easily and view tasks as it relates to specific folders/projects. Users are able to see all tasks from a centralized table view. Custom fields makes it easy to customize aspects of workflow.”_

_“All your tasks in one place is a game changer, you can schedule a big task, breakdown and have interval reminders incase you forget. Repetitive tasks tend to be forgotten over the day and one you slot them in you'll not miss out.”_

_“Allows me to review important tasks and date requirements easily. Daily a reminder is sent to ensure I keep up to date with tasks and ensures tasks are not forgotten or not completed.”_

## 2\. Source control

Source control, also known as version control, helps track and manage changes to software code throughout the development process. With source control, multiple developers can work on different parts of the codebase simultaneously. This feature maintains a history of each code modification, addition, or deletion, allowing developers to revert to previous code versions or compare different versions to understand changes better.

Source control in app development software enables the creation of branches within the codebase. These branches let developers experiment with new features or bug fixes without affecting the main code. Once they're happy with the changes, they can merge a branch into the main codebase.

### What business problems does source control solve?

The source control feature of an application development platform helps solve the following challenges:

- **Conflicting edits:** Source control prevents developers from accidentally overwriting each other's work, particularly when multiple developers are working simultaneously on the same part of the codebase. By utilizing branches and merges, source control enables developers to collaborate efficiently while managing and resolving conflicting changes before they are integrated into the main codebase.

- **Lost work:** Source control preserves a comprehensive history of changes, allowing developers to revert to previous versions when needed. This capability helps recover accidentally deleted code or roll back changes that introduce bugs, ensuring application integrity and reliability throughout the development lifecycle.

- **Lack of visibility into code changes:** Source control provides a clear history of who modified what and when in the codebase. This transparency enhances debugging efforts by enabling developers to trace the origins of issues, review contributions, and understand the evolution of the codebase over time. It also fosters accountability within development teams by documenting work progression and facilitating effective collaboration across distributed teams.

### How users benefit from source control

These review excerpts from software reviewers of the source control feature describe how it helps them:

_“Source control enables collaboration among developers working on the same project. It allows multiple team members to work on different features or bug fixes simultaneously. With source control, developers can easily merge their changes, track modifications, and resolve conflicts, ensuring smooth teamwork and reducing the risk of code conflicts.”_

_“With this feature, we can control the changes we are doing in a particular file and directories of our project. It helps us to keep a record of the changes and helps to roll back the specific version of a file if you want to replace it or found any issue in the newer version.”_

_“Source and version control gives the developer the ability to keep track of the changes made on the code and to revert back to previous versions with a simple mouse click.”_

## 3\. Access controls/permissions

The access controls/permissions feature dictates what actions a user can perform or which functionalities they can access within the software. For example, a team manager can add new app development stages, edit existing ones, and manage user accounts, while a developer can access only personal workload and communication tools. By defining roles and assigning specific permissions to each role, administrators can ensure only authorized users can perform certain actions or access specific data.

### What business problems do access controls/permissions solve?

The access controls/permissions feature of an app development platform helps address the following challenges:

- **Data security breaches:** The feature prevents unauthorized access to sensitive data within an application, including user information, source code, databases, and application configurations. By implementing role-based access control, managers can restrict user access to development environments, code repositories, and deployment tools based on the principle of least privilege. This ensures only authorized personnel have access to specific parts of the application or infrastructure, thereby reducing the risk of data breaches or unauthorized modifications.

- **Compliances issues:** Application development often involves handling sensitive data and intellectual property, subject to regulatory requirements such as the General Data Protection and Regulation (GDPR) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Access control helps development teams comply with these regulations by enforcing data access policies and audit trails. By logging access activities and enforcing encryption and access restrictions, teams can demonstrate compliance during audits and ensure sensitive information is handled securely throughout the development lifecycle.

- **Operational inefficiency:** Application developers are assigned specific permissions based on their roles (e.g., developer, tester, administrator) or project requirements. This allows efficient management of code repositories, version control systems, and deployment pipelines, ensuring team members can access the tools and resources necessary to perform their tasks. By automating access provisioning and deprovisioning processes, team managers can minimize delays and errors associated with manual permission management, improving overall team productivity and operational efficiency.

### How users benefit from access controls/permissions

These review excerpts from software reviewers of the access control feature describe how it helps them:

_“I really appreciate the access control permissions feature. It allows me to have granular control over who can view, edit, or share the files and folders stored in my Drive. This level of control ensures that sensitive information remains secure and only accessible to authorized individuals.”_

_“Access and control have a significant impact on a product's functionality and user experience. Proper access control ensures that users can only perform authorized actions, enhancing security and protecting sensitive data. Effective control mechanisms enable users to navigate, interact, and customize the product efficiently, leading to a seamless and intuitive user experience.”_

_“Access control allow us to customize the role from scratch. It define specific responsibilities and privileges for different roles whilst ensuring that they secure the company’s sensitive data. With role-based access controls, admin can either associate a built-in role to an agent or define permissions from scratch using custom roles.”_

## 4\. Graphical user interface

A graphical user interface (GUI) provides a visual environment for developers to design and build an app's user interface. Instead of coding every element manually, developers can use GUI tools to drag and drop components, such as buttons, text fields, menus, and images, on a design canvas. They can also access a library of pre-built widgets and controls that can be customized in appearance and behavior, saving development time.

GUIs enhance productivity by allowing developers to see the layout and interactions of their applications in real time. Compared to traditional text-based coding, GUI-based development offers a more intuitive way to design user interfaces. It also often includes features for previewing how the interface will appear on different devices or screen sizes, aiding in creating responsive and user-friendly applications.

### What business problems does a graphical user interface solve?

The graphical user interface feature of an app development tool helps solve the following challenges:

- **Inconsistent UI design:** The GUI feature provides a standardized framework for designing user interfaces. It offers pre-designed components, templates, and guidelines to help maintain consistency across the application, reducing confusion and improving usability. For application development teams, this means fewer resources spent on manually designing and testing UI elements, resulting in faster deployment and better user acceptance.

- **Challenging codes:** GUI frameworks often have libraries and tools that simplify implementing complex user interface interactions. Instead of writing extensive code from scratch for every UI element, developers can use GUI libraries to drag and drop components and configure properties. This reduces development time, minimizes coding errors, and allows developers to focus more on business logic than repetitive UI tasks.

- **Slow prototyping and iteration process:** Traditional text-based interfaces can slow down development's prototyping and iteration phases. The GUI feature enables rapid prototyping by providing visual tools that allow designers and developers to mock up interfaces, test functionality, and iterate based on feedback. This iterative process refines user experience and ensures the final product meets user expectations.

### How users benefit from graphical user interface

These review excerpts from software reviewers of the GUI feature describe how it helps them:

_“It helps me or any end user to have the roadmap into my data flows and entity relationships while developing it into the design and user interface.”_

_“It allows me to see my application running on different devices at the same time, which makes it easier to detect bugs or implement automated tests.”_

_“GUI continues to improve with options for presenting data in the best format for the business case and workflow. User feedback can be quickly incorporated to make changes that ensure ease of use of portal and there is something for everyone with different views for different user types.”_

## 5\. Debugging

The debugging feature helps developers identify, diagnose, and fix code errors or bugs. It allows them to step through the code line by line, inspect the values of variables, and monitor the execution flow. Breaks can be set at specific points in the code, enabling the program to pause execution so developers can examine the application’s current state and understand how data is being manipulated. Additionally, the debugging feature often includes call stacks, which show the sequence of function calls leading up to a certain point, helping trace the origin of errors.

### What business problems does debugging solve?

The debugging feature of an app development tool helps address the following challenges:

- **Software malfunctions:** Debugging helps developers identify and fix errors (bugs) that cause applications to malfunction. These malfunctions can manifest as crashes, unexpected behavior, or incorrect outputs. By tracing the source of a problem, developers can correct the issue, ensuring the application functions as intended and delivers a reliable user experience.

- **App performance issues:** The debugging feature helps analyze performance metrics, such as CPU usage and memory allocation, to pinpoint areas causing slowdowns or inefficiencies. By identifying code that’s consuming excessive resources, developers can optimize the application, resulting in faster load times, smoother interactions, and improved application performance.

- **Security vulnerabilities:** The debugging process allows developers to detect and address security flaws within the code. By examining the application's behavior and checking for vulnerabilities, such as potential exploits or insecure coding practices, developers can identify weaknesses and implement necessary security measures to protect the application from attacks and safeguard user data.

### How users benefit from debugging

These review excerpts from software reviewers of the debugging feature describe how it helps them:

_“Ability to create bug tickets is helpful to track progress on workflow and determine the quality of the product the team is building. Can be used to determine how many specific issues impact product across teams, such as tracking accessibility defects that block users with disabilities from using the product.”_

_“Debugging is the routine process of locating and removing bugs, errors or abnormalities from programs. It's a must have skill for any app developer because it helps to find subtle bug that are not visible during code reviews or that only happens when a specific condition occurs.”_

_“Debugging plays a critical role in development. This allows the controlled or segmented execution of the process in order to recognize and validate its correct operation. As well as the ease in identifying errors or exceptions that occurred during execution in order to solve them in the most effective way.”_
