## Four authentication mobile apps that help verify the user’s identity.

Are you an IT manager who often finds it challenging to manage multiple passwords, implement authentication methods, and prevent data breaches while simultaneously ensuring regulatory compliance? While an authentication solution can solve such challenges for you, convenience of authentication remains a matter of concern. This is where mobile apps can help.

While web or desktop authentication tools can be used for securing access to a user’s account or sensitive information, mobile applications can be more convenient, especially for the remote workforce. The apps, with a relatively more clickable interface as compared to traditional desktop or laptop devices, allow users to conveniently access their accounts from anywhere.

We highlight the top four authentication mobile apps based on sentiment analysis of reviews in alphabetical order. [Read more](#methodology).

## Why should you consider a mobile app for your authentication needs?

Mobile authentication apps, available for download via Google and Apple app stores, offer several features for your authentication needs. Here are some common reasons why you should consider a mobile authentication solution.

- Enables users to authenticate from anywhere, at any time using their smartphones, making access more convenient compared to traditional desktop or laptop devices.

- Offers secure codes for offline authentication that allow users to gain access even without an internet connection.

- Cost-effective as compared to traditional hardware tokens.

- Offers built-in security features, such as biometric recognition to provide an extra layer of security over the traditional username and password authentication methods.

## How to choose authentication mobile apps for your business

Choosing mobile authentication apps for your business requires careful consideration of your specific needs. If you are a small business owner, here are some common considerations to help you choose the most suited mobile authentication apps.

- **Understand your business requirements.** While considering an authentication app, understand your business-specific requirements and the features that you necessarily want in your app. For instance, you may want to consider the level of security offered by the app to protect mobile data and analyze it to check if it meets your organization’s security needs. Some security features that you can look at include, encryption, push notifications, time-based passwords, device management, and compliance with industry regulations. Other than these, consider ease of use, scalability, technical support, and integration with existing/third-party systems.

- **Look for FIPS-mode encryption.** Your mobile authentication app should operate in a mode that is compliant with the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States. Before considering a mobile authentication app, make sure to check for FIPS encryption as it helps protect mobile app data and is considered a benchmark for data security.

- **Evaluate authentication methods.** Consider all the authentication factors and methods supported by the app before finalizing a mobile authentication solution. These may include password-based authentication and biometric authentication, such as fingerprint or facial recognition on a mobile device. Determine which options will work best for your end users and their specific needs.

## Common questions to ask when selecting authentication mobile apps

Here are some common questions that you can ask vendors before shortlisting the right authentication apps for your business.

Does the mobile app offer necessary reporting features?

Many mobile authentication apps offer reporting and analytics features that enable users to track login attempts, monitor user behavior, and identify potential security breaches. Before selecting the best mobile app for your business needs, ask the software provider about the app’s reporting features and the reports that you can potentially generate with the app.

What platforms are supported by the authentication tool?

Before considering an authentication tool, make sure that the system supports all the platforms and devices (Android, iOS) used by the organization. Also, check the mobile versions supported by the software when looking for the best mobile app.

Does the app offer offline access?

Offline access ensures that you have access to important applications and resources even without an internet connection, thereby ensuring increased productivity at all times. While evaluating potential mobile authentication applications, do check with the vendor whether these allow you to login into multiple accounts and applications without the internet.
