Tekmetric and Shopmonkey are the two names that come up most when an independent shop is choosing its first real [auto repair software](https://www.capterra.com/auto-repair-software/). Both carry strong all-time ratings in Capterra's review data (4.7 for Tekmetric, 4.7 for Shopmonkey, across 135 and 405 reviews respectively). On paper, they look nearly interchangeable.

When I filtered that same review data down to just the last 24 months, a different picture emerged. Tekmetric's rating drops sharply, to 3.1, though on a small recent sample of just eight reviews, three of them one-star, each pointing at pricing or support friction that barely shows up in its all-time record. Shopmonkey's rating drops too, from 4.7 to 3.8, on a much larger recent sample of 36, and the drop has a clear cause: a rocky "version 2.0" platform migration and a cancellation-policy complaint show up repeatedly in its most recent one-star reviews.

That gap between the all-time reputation and the current experience is what I set out to understand in this guide, alongside the more familiar trade-off between the two products: focused simplicity versus all-in-one depth. Rather than a spec-by-spec rundown, I focus on the four areas where it plays out most clearly: pricing, everyday usability, customer support, and platform reliability. If you know which of those matters most to your shop, the decision tends to follow.

## The verdict up front

| | [Tekmetric](https://www.capterra.com/p/190952/Tekmetric/) | [Shopmonkey](https://www.capterra.com/p/169022/Shopmonkey/) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Overall rating, all-time** | 4.7 (135 reviews) | 4.7 (405 reviews) |
| **Overall rating, last 24 months** | 3.1 (8 reviews) | 3.8 (36 reviews) |
| **Ease of use (all-time)** | 4.6 | 4.6 |
| **Customer support (all-time)** | 4.8 | 4.6 |
| **Reviewer base, industry mix** | 91.9% Automotive, one of the most concentrated reviewer bases in this data set | 66.7% Automotive, with real adoption in trucking, accounting, aviation, and retail |
| **Pricing model** | Tiered by feature set, never by user; unlimited users on every tier | Tiered by feature set and user count; included seats are capped per tier, extra seats cost more |
| **Entry price** | $179/month (Start, billed annually) | $215/month (Basic, billed annually) |

**I'm flagging the rating gap between the two time windows before anything else**, because it matters more than the all-time number alone. Both products look excellent on their full history. In the last 24 months, both look meaningfully less consistent, and Shopmonkey's larger recent sample makes that drop harder to dismiss as noise than Tekmetric's does.

#### Device Compatibilty

**Best for focused simplicity: Tekmetric.** Its usability theme is the most one-sided signal in this data set (55 positive mentions against 10 negative, out of 135 reviews). Its recent sample is too small, at eight reviews, to treat any theme as a confirmed pattern, but it's worth naming plainly: three of those eight are one-star, each citing pricing or support friction. Its reviewer base is also the most concentrated in this data, with 124 of 135 reviewers working in Automotive specifically.

#### Trial/Free Version

#### Device Compatibilty

**Best for all-in-one depth: Shopmonkey.** It carries roughly three times Tekmetric's review volume in both windows, and its integration theme is more than three times the size of Tekmetric's equivalent (51 positive mentions versus 15). That depth comes with a real cost: pricing is Shopmonkey's single largest negative theme of either product (57 negative mentions), and its recent sentiment dip is the more statistically solid of the two. It also draws a meaningfully broader reviewer base outside core auto repair.

Neither is the wrong choice. The rest of this piece breaks down where that trade-off actually plays out.

## Tekmetric vs. Shopmonkey pricing: what you'll actually pay

This is the first place I'd tell a shop owner to look closely, because the pricing models work differently, not just at different price points. Tekmetric prices by feature tier, never by user: every tier, Start through Enterprise, includes unlimited users, unlimited repair orders, and unlimited support. Shopmonkey also prices by feature tier, but each tier caps included user seats (three on Basic, four on Clever, five on Genius) and charges $20 per month for every additional seat.

I checked both vendors' current pricing pages rather than relying on a cached figure, and it's a good thing I did: Tekmetric has restructured its pricing since an earlier version of this analysis recorded a single flat rate. It now has four tiers.

| | Tekmetric | Shopmonkey |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Entry tier | Start: $179/month annual ($199/month monthly) | Basic: $215/month annual ($239/month monthly), 3 included seats, +$20/month per extra seat |
| Mid tier | Grow: $309/month annual ($349/month monthly) | Clever: $359/month annual ($399/month monthly), 4 included seats |
| Top tier | Scale: $409/month annual ($439/month monthly) | Genius: $449/month annual ($499/month monthly), 5 included seats |
| Multi-location | Enterprise: custom pricing | Multi-Shop: custom pricing, bulk seat licensing |
| Pricing theme, all-time (135 / 405 reviews) | 5 positive / 4 negative mentions (both counts near the 5-mention floor, treat as a weak signal either way) | 24 positive / 57 negative mentions (pricing is Shopmonkey's single largest negative theme of either product) |
| Pricing theme, last 24 months | Sample too thin (8 reviews) to cite; 2 of the 3 recent 1-star Tekmetric reviews name cost specifically | 3 positive / 7 negative mentions (negative clears the 5-mention floor within this window; positive doesn't) |

Both products draw real, specific pricing complaints, not just "it's expensive."

**What users say**

"The monthly pricing is quite steep for a smaller independent shop."

Cristin H., Office Manager, Automotive (201-500 employees) (Capterra, July 2026)

"Pros: Stable software but if you want more functions you need to pay higher prices for add ons and end up spending more than 1k a month."

Carlos C., Owner, Automotive (11-50 employees) (Capterra, July 2026)

**Pricing changes.** Confirm current rates directly with Tekmetric and Shopmonkey before deciding, the figures above are current as of August 10, 2026, but both vendors adjust pricing and packaging over time, as Tekmetric's own tier restructuring during this analysis shows.

## How Tekmetric and Shopmonkey compare on everyday usability

Tekmetric's usability theme is the most lopsided in this data set (55 positive mentions against 10 negative, out of 135 reviews). Shopmonkey's last-24-months usability theme is also net positive, but proportionally more mixed (18 positive against six negative, out of a 36-review window).

**What users say**

"Ease of use. Very easy to use, the system is very intuitive."

Scott S., Owner, Automotive (51-200 employees) (Capterra, October 2024)

"For the price, we expected smoother onboarding and noticeable efficiency gains. Instead, the learning curve and time spent hunting for basic functions offset any promised benefits."

Matt S., CEO, Transportation/Trucking/Railroad (11-50 employees) (Capterra, November 2025)

"I like that it has a very user-friendly dashboard. It doesn't feel clunky or outdated like some legacy auto shop systems."

Ryan P., Service Tech, Automotive (11-50 employees) (Capterra, February 2026)

"I find that it can be difficult to navigate/explain to new users. Once I got the hang of things, however, it became easier."

Nicole S., Research Analyst, Automotive (10,001+ employees) (Capterra, July 2025)

## How Tekmetric and Shopmonkey compare on customer support

This is the dimension where the recent-vs-all-time gap is most visible for both products. All-time, Tekmetric's support theme runs strongly positive (21 positive mentions against five negative), and Shopmonkey's does too (129 against 45). But in Shopmonkey's last-24-months window, that ratio narrows to nearly even (10 positive against eight negative), and the negative mentions include some pointed complaints about response times.

**What users say**

"The Technical Support Staff are ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! Patient, responsive, and professional."

Stephen K., Founder and President, Automotive (11-50 employees) (Capterra, February 2021)

"Customer service, it's the worst! Rude people working and not a single word about how to treat a customer."

Carlos C., Owner, Automotive (11-50 employees) (Capterra, July 2026)

"Shopmonkey has amazing customer support. I ran into a bug and was greeted by a polite and helpful customer service agent."

Nicole S., Research Analyst, Automotive (10,001+ employees) (Capterra, July 2025)

"Wait nine days to speak to customer service... 9 days with help to be told 1 more hour to resolve issue."

William T., Owner, Automotive (2-10 employees) (Capterra, December 2024)

Carlos C.'s quote above is one of only three reviews in Tekmetric's last-24-months sample, so I'm treating it as a specific, real complaint worth watching rather than a confirmed shift in an otherwise strong all-time support record. Shopmonkey's negative support mentions in the same window (eight, clearing the 5-mention floor on its own) are a more solid signal.

## How Tekmetric and Shopmonkey compare on platform reliability

Tekmetric's reliability theme skews negative by a wide margin, the most one-sided negative theme in its data (16 negative mentions against five positive, out of 135 reviews). Reviewers describe slowdowns, occasional crashes, and the basic risk of a cloud-based system going down. Shopmonkey's last-24-months reliability theme is smaller in absolute terms (five negative, three positive) but points in a similar direction.

**What users say**

"The program crashes more than others that I have used. It also loses communications with parts houses often."

Dori O., Service Advisor, Automotive (1,001-5,000 employees) (Capterra, July 2023)

"If we lose internet connection we are down and then all of our systems are down. We have a backup internet connection."

Scott S., Owner, Automotive (51-200 employees) (Capterra, October 2024)

"ShopMonkey can run a bit slow. It has lag between clicks and pages."

Jeremy G., Lead Mechanic, Automotive (11-50 employees) (Capterra, November 2024)

"Everything. Constant bugs, constant problems. Customer support is non existent. Reports aren't accurate."

Kevin H., Owner, Automotive (11-50 employees) (Capterra, May 2025)

## Which fits your shop?

I now have decoded company-size and industry data for both products, so this section uses real percentages rather than a qualitative placeholder.

**Company size.** Both products are dominated by small businesses, and closer together than I expected (73.3% of Tekmetric's reviewers and 76.5% of Shopmonkey's fall into the self-employed, 2-10, or 11-50 employee bands). Neither product is meaningfully skewed toward larger shops, so company size isn't a strong differentiator here, and I'd rather say that plainly than force one.

**Industry mix, on the other hand, is a real and sizable difference.** Tekmetric's reviewer base is about as concentrated as a reviewer base gets, at 91.9% Automotive. Shopmonkey's is more spread out, at 66.7% Automotive, with meaningful shares in Transportation/Trucking/Railroad (4.7%), Accounting (3.2%), Airlines/Aviation (3.2%), and Retail (1.7%). That tells me Shopmonkey has found real adoption outside core auto repair, likely from its more general-purpose service-business feature set, while Tekmetric's usage is almost entirely from the shops it was built for.

| Factor | Choose Tekmetric if | Choose Shopmonkey if |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pricing model | You want to avoid per-seat fees entirely as your team grows | You have a small, stable team (3-5 people) and don't mind paying for extra seats if you scale |
| Day-to-day usability | You want the more consistently positive usability track record | You're comfortable with a slightly more mixed but still net-positive experience |
| Customer support, recent experience | You want Tekmetric's still-strong all-time support record, while knowing its very small recent sample includes a couple of sharp complaints | You want a product with a larger recent review base, even though that base shows support sentiment has gotten more mixed lately |
| Platform reliability tolerance | You want the more consistent uptime and performance record over Tekmetric's full history | Occasional lag or bugs after updates isn't a dealbreaker for you |
| How specialized your business is | You're a dedicated auto repair shop and want a tool built and reviewed almost exclusively by others like you | You're in an adjacent trade (mobile mechanics, fleet, tire and wheel, general field service) where Shopmonkey's broader industry adoption suggests it flexes further |

## How to choose between Tekmetric and Shopmonkey

If a strong, consistent usability and support track record matters most, and you're comfortable that Tekmetric's recent review sample is too small to draw firm conclusions from either way, I'd default to Tekmetric, especially if you're a dedicated auto repair shop like the vast majority of its reviewers. If you want Shopmonkey's deeper feature set, a much larger base of recent reviews to judge by, or you operate in an adjacent trade where its broader industry adoption is a good sign, it's still a defensible choice, just go in with eyes open about the recent pricing and support complaints. Either way, I'd read a current sample of each product's reviews directly on Capterra before deciding, not just the excerpts here.

## FAQ

How much does Tekmetric cost compared to Shopmonkey?

Tekmetric's tiers run from $179 to $409 per month (annual billing), all with unlimited users and no per-seat fees. Shopmonkey's tiers run from $215 to $449 per month (annual billing), with three to five included user seats and a $20-per-month charge for each additional seat. Confirm current rates directly with both vendors, pricing and packaging change over time.

Does Shopmonkey integrate with QuickBooks?

Yes, it's a commonly cited strength in this export's all-time integration theme (51 positive mentions versus 43 negative). A few reviewers describe rough edges during setup, one 2025 review specifically mentions invoice-numbering conflicts during a QuickBooks merge.

Which has better customer support, Tekmetric or Shopmonkey?

By all-time rating, Tekmetric (4.8 vs. 4.6). But Shopmonkey's larger recent review sample shows support sentiment has gotten more mixed in the last 24 months, and Tekmetric's own recent sample, while too small to be conclusive, includes a couple of sharp complaints of its own. I'd call this one closer right now than the all-time numbers suggest.

Which is easier to use, Tekmetric or Shopmonkey?

Both carry the same all-time ease-of-use rating (4.6). Tekmetric's usability theme is the more one-sided positive signal in this data (55 positive to 10 negative mentions all-time), while Shopmonkey's is net positive but more mixed.

What are good alternatives to Tekmetric or Shopmonkey?

Reviewers in this data set most often mention AutoLeap, Mitchell 1, and NAPA TRACS as alternatives, depending on whether they're prioritizing price, feature depth, or familiarity with a legacy system. I haven't evaluated those products against the same methodology used here.

Which product has more reviews?

Shopmonkey, with 405 reviews in this export compared to Tekmetric's 135 (both all-time). Capterra's live reviews pages currently display smaller counts for both (267 and 104 respectively), the gap is reviews that were later deleted or unpublished on Capterra after this export was pulled.

This comparison is based on Capterra's verified reviews and ratings for Tekmetric and Shopmonkey, current as of August 2026. Both products are listed in Capterra's [Auto Repair Software](https://www.capterra.com/auto-repair-software/) category, and all ratings, pricing, and feature data referenced in this guide come from their individual product pages within that category, not from third-party sources.

To build this comparison, I:

- Pulled overall ratings, review counts, and theme data directly from [Tekmetric's](https://www.capterra.com/p/190952/Tekmetric/) and [Shopmonkey's](https://www.capterra.com/p/169022/Shopmonkey/) Capterra pages, and the [Shopmonkey vs. Tekmetric Capterra comparison page](https://www.capterra.com/compare/169022-190952/Shopmonkey-vs-Tekmetric).

- Analyzed a review-level export of each product's full review history, current as of August 10, 2026, to compute ratings and pros/cons themes across two time windows: all-time, and the last 24 months. All-time figures anchor the overall rating shown throughout this guide; last-24-months figures are the primary source for pros, cons, and quotes, so the comparison reflects current product experience rather than years-old feedback.

- Surfaced a pro or con only when the underlying theme appeared in five or more distinct verified reviews within the window cited; patterns with fewer mentions are noted narratively as a small-sample signal rather than presented as a confirmed theme.

- Sourced company size and industry mix from each product's reviewer profile data in the same export, reported as a percentage of each product's total reviewer base.

- Sourced pricing from each vendor's own published pricing page, cross-checked against Capterra's published pricing data.

- Did not rely on hands-on product testing. This guide reflects aggregated verified review data rather than a personal trial of either platform.

**Editorial independence:** I select and compare products based on an objective methodology. While some vendors may pay Capterra when they receive web traffic or leads through this site, that has no influence on my methodology, ratings, or conclusions.

Tekmetric's ratings reflect 135 verified reviews and Shopmonkey's ratings reflect 405 verified reviews, both as captured in the review export used for this analysis, current as of August 2026. Capterra's live pages currently display fewer reviews for both products (104 for Tekmetric, 267 for Shopmonkey), the difference reflects reviews that were later deleted or unpublished on Capterra after this export was pulled. Ratings and review counts are subject to change as new reviews are published.

Pros, cons, and quotes throughout this guide draw primarily from each product's last 24 months of reviews. Tekmetric's last 24 months include only eight reviews, too few on their own to support a themed claim, so its pros and cons draw on its full review history instead, with the smaller recent sample discussed directly in the text as a signal worth watching rather than a confirmed pattern. Both products' average rating over the last 24 months runs meaningfully lower than their all-time average (Tekmetric: 3.1 versus 4.7; Shopmonkey: 3.8 versus 4.7), a divergence I've called out earlier in this guide rather than only here.

Pros and cons themes are identified through keyword matching across each review's stated pros and cons text, since this export does not include a pre-tagged theme field. This method offers a reasonable approximation of common patterns; individual reviews were spot-checked where the classification was ambiguous.

Software pricing changes. I recommend confirming current rates directly with Tekmetric and Shopmonkey before making a purchasing decision.
