**TL;DR:** _In this article, I share my picks for the eight best EMR software platforms, evaluated on patient records management and charting, based on 1,736 verified Capterra reviews from October 2024 to October 2026._

In this article, I've analyzed 1,736 Capterra reviews collected over the last two years to identify the eight best [EMR software](https://www.capterra.com/electronic-medical-records-software/) products. These are evaluated on their review score over that period, as well as their inclusion of patient records management and charting capabilities.

Health care practices need software that can manage patient records and charting while supporting the way their teams actually work. Those needs vary significantly by setting, with therapy and wellness practices often prioritizing notes and bookings, while specialty or hospital settings require more complex clinical workflows.

This is why I've identified eight of the best EMR software platforms based on verified Capterra user reviews. I've looked at where each product stands out and the types of practices or workflows it’s best suited to. The tools I've chosen are listed in ranking order based on their overall score from Capterra reviewers.

## EMR software vs. EHR software

The EMR vs. EHR question comes down to where a patient’s record can travel. An EMR is the digital chart a practice keeps for its own patients, covering charting, scheduling, and billing. An EHR is built to follow a patient across providers and organizations, so sharing information between care settings matters as much as the chart itself.

In my view, this is the distinction most vendor content skips past. If your team needs to share records with outside providers or health systems alongside day-to-day charting, EHR software built for that sharing saves you from bolting on extra tools later.

## What to look for in EMR software

The right fit depends less on the category and more on exactly how your practice operates. Here are important questions worth asking yourself before comparing specific platforms and deciding which is the best EMR software for you.

### Which workflows matter most to your team?

Based on the Capterra reviews I analyzed, the eight picks lead with different strengths. EHRYourWay stands out for configurable workflows, ClinicSense for online booking, Jane for hands-on support, ModMed for patient communication, Epic for centralized patient records, Carepatron for ease of use, Tebra for in-house billing, and athenaOne for scheduling.

Decide which part of your day causes the most friction, then match the product to that, and ask each vendor whether its templates and workflows cover the way your practice works.

### Do you need records shared beyond your own practice?

Some platforms are built to share records across departments and with community providers, while others are designed around one practice’s charts. If your care is coordinated across several organizations, confirm how records are shared before you shortlist the best EMR / EHR software for your needs.

### Does it need to be cloud-based?

Many practices prefer cloud-based EMR software, as staff can access patient records through a web browser without installing software on individual computers. Capterra lets you filter [EMR software](https://www.capterra.com/electronic-medical-records-software/) products by cloud or on-premise deployment, but check with individual vendors for the specific access options you need.

### What questions should you ask vendors before buying?

Ask who handles data migration, how long setup takes, which systems it connects to, and how you reach support when something breaks. Reviewers sometimes mention limited or missing features and slow customer support, so it’s worth clarifying these areas with vendors before choosing a product.

## Frequently asked questions

What is EMR software?

EMR software, short for electronic medical record software, is a digital version of a patient’s chart that a healthcare provider uses to record visits, diagnoses, treatments, and notes. Patient records management and charting are often core features.

What features should EMR software have?

Core features to look for in EMR software include patient records management and charting. Many also typically have scheduling, billing, a patient portal, e-prescribing, telehealth, and AI documentation tools.

Is EMR software HIPAA compliant?

Not automatically, so confirm before you buy. Ask any vendor whether it will sign a business associate agreement, which is the legal commitment that covers how it handles your patients’ protected health information.

Is EMR software the same as EHR software?

Not exactly. EMR software is built around a practice's own patient charts, while EHR software is designed to share a patient's full record across providers, and many products serve both purposes.

What is the best EMR software?

The best EMR software depends on what your practice needs most. Among my picks based on Capterra reviews, ModMed stands out for patient communication, Tebra for in-house billing, and athenaOne for scheduling.
