## Learn more about PayPal

### How PayPal works

PayPal acts as a middleman between a user’s bank and the online stores or people the user sends or receives money from. Here's a breakdown of how PayPal works:[\[2\]](#sources)

Setting up an account

- You can start by signing up for a PayPal account on its website or app. You can choose between a personal account (for individuals) or a business account (for merchants).

- Once the account is created, you can link your bank accounts, credit, or debit cards to PayPal. This allows PayPal to draw funds directly from these sources when making payments.

Making payments

- You can pay for goods and services online using your PayPal account. When checking out on an eCommerce site, you can select PayPal as the payment method, log into your PayPal account, and confirm the transaction. PayPal then transfers the money from your linked bank account, debit card, or credit card to the seller's account, minus any fees.

- PayPal lets you send money to others using your email address or mobile number. The recipient gets a notification and can transfer the money to their bank account or keep it in their PayPal balance for future transactions.

Receiving money

- **Personal transactions:** You can receive money from friends and family. The sender uses their email or phone number linked to their PayPal account.

- **Business transactions:** As a business, you can accept payments for goods and services through your websites, in-person transactions using PayPal’s point-of-sale solutions, or invoices sent to clients.

Withdrawing money

- **Transferring to the bank:** You can transfer your PayPal balance to your linked bank account. Depending on the bank, this process can take a few days.

- **Instant transfers:** PayPal offers instant transfers to linked debit cards for a small fee, making the money available in minutes.

Security and dispute resolution

PayPal prioritizes user safety with encryption and secure transactions. It also offers dispute resolution programs to mediate disagreements between buyers and sellers.[\[3\]](#sources)

- **Buyer protection:** “_If an eligible item that you’ve bought online doesn’t arrive, or doesn’t match the seller’s description, PayPal's Buyer Protection may reimburse you for the full amount of the item plus postage._”

- **Seller protection:** “_If you received an unauthorized payment or a buyer claims he never received his item, our Seller Protection can help you get the full amount of an eligible payment, subject of the Claim, Chargeback, or Reversal and waive the Chargeback Fee, if applicable._”

PayPal fees

- **Personal accounts:** Sending money to friends and family within the same country using a linked bank account or PayPal balance is usually free. However, using a credit or debit card to send money may incur a fee.

- **Business accounts:** Businesses pay transaction fees to receive payments, which vary depending on the payment method and the country.

International transactions

- **Currency conversion:** PayPal allows you to send and receive money in multiple currencies. It automatically converts the currency based on the recipient’s preference and charges a conversion fee.[\[5\]](#sources)

- **Cross-border fees:** Sending money internationally may incur additional fees depending on the countries involved.[\[6\]](#sources)

**Methodology**

\*Why PayPal? This is one of a series of articles from Capterra covering major software vendors and products. We considered covering vendors who met the following criteria:

- Vendor sells products in online payment processing-related software categories

- Vendor offers at least two products in their portfolio

- Vendor’s products appear in more than one Capterra Shortlist report (as of May 2024)

For the eligible set of vendors, we assessed monthly search volume for brand name on Google searches to identify most-searched vendors.

Data sources include verified user reviews, publicly available information, and data provided by technology vendors.

Review excerpts are passages extracted from longer reviews written by verified reviewers. We obtain these excerpts by applying an algorithm that considers factors including, but not limited to, word count and topic coverage. Excerpts are evaluated for positive or negative sentiment and receive a sentiment score. In this article, we’ve highlighted excerpts with the highest positive sentiment scores and the lowest negative sentiment scores. Excerpts represent user opinion and do not represent the views of, nor constitute an endorsement by, Capterra or its affiliates. Excerpts are not edited for clarity or grammar.

\*\*For products with sufficient user reviews, we used our proprietary data science algorithms, sometimes in conjunction with generative AI technology, to identify and summarize user perspectives toward product offerings.
