No negative feelings and we have it running at a lot of our customers, most installations just run, notifications keep coming in, and backups are made. We sometimes test it , and every time the backup can be restored. Not losing sleep over this. Pros I liked the easy, no fuss install. being up and running in 15 minutes. Cons It used to be that the backups were easily accessible, vhd files in a subfolder, nowadays it's more complex, I guess because of regulations/ security. I liked how it was before, that way I could even use the backed up VHD as any VHD. Most of the functionality is now already in Altaro, so there is less need for it. But would have been nice to have. But to be honest I don't miss it. Sysadmin Computer Networking Used the software for: 2+ years ### "it is ok but I would not reccomend it to anyone" February 11, 2022 3.0 to get to the most actual issue: when your backup reaches a certain point and gets too big altaro becomes almost useless. they told me there is no way to improve this situation. when the backup gets too large and you need to do it daily the health check cannot finnish within 24 hours and starts all over again instead of continuing or something. I think i will give Iperius or Uranium a try. This is unbearable. "we are working on version 9 - that one is going to be better" ... well yes , maybe... but since that one I will have to pay another 1000€ or something like the last time, it is just infuriating... not having a system work anywhere close to fine. Pros \- many functions - relatively easy to use (when it works) - reasonable price - fast and relatively good support Cons I cannot belive how SLOW this thing is. It has been a fight for years to make it run at some acceptable speeds. Painfully SLOW! no matter how good the harware is. It does not use the RAM/CPU/HARDDrives/NETWORK etc. fully. And noone can tell me why. I guess they have some crappy programming that throttels the threads or something. For example: it can do , when it works properly, a backup of like 10VMs with 3-4TB in like half a day. But it cannot finish a health check of the backup in less then 24 hours or resume the next day where it stopped. It starts all over again and never finishes. The drives have a RAID 10 Array and can do 500MB/S. yet the check barely challanges the drives. and then there is the issue with updates: half time I had to do a version update whithin the same big release, I had issues like: the backup got corrupted, or the settings got lost or similar. With help from the support team we could then solve some of the issues but then here we have the next problem: you have to renew the license to have access to support. which is fine BUT - when you renew after your old support has expired, you pay not from the day you buy support but rather from the day your old support expired -> RIPOFF! in my oppinion - they mess up the software with some small update inbetween and then you have to pay to resolve it. - one issue we solved ourselves and found out months later: your RAM on the Server NEEDS to be in DUAL CHANNEL or else Altaro will behave like absolute crap. Reason for choosing VM Backup We were thinking about Veem but that was too steep in the pricing. Then someone told us about altaro. But that was a mistake. We had a situation causing us to move away from another backup vendor due to issues (not being able to depend on a backup to simply do its job causes sleepless nights after a while). We installed Altaro VM Backup, configured it - all in 15 minutes, including set-up of the email alerts and left it for the evening. Next day - Emails are usually our first encounter as to what occurred overnight - They were all Green! Seriously - a big wow from us! 7 Virtual Machines all backed up successfully and in a time window that seriously made me look twice. The compression and the speed of backups - wow! Pros I have a few things I like - but the most nicest thing: The user interface on Altaro product always seems so simple, and logical. Being in IT support, I dread those times when it takes 20 minutes to work out the GUI or interface to try and restore a file or check a backup log. Cons OK - Not being funny - I'll have to come back to this question, because I struggle to think of something I really don't like right now. June 3, 2024 4.0 Pros It did what it was supposed to and backed our servers up to our chosen media each night. Once it was setup, the backups ran very consistently, with little need for adjustment or error correction. We had very few failed backups. Cons Configuration is missing a lot of granular options, making it harder to do things you may want to do with your backups. Configuring backups can be a pain due to this oversimplification. Other backup packages were either way too simple or way too expensive and too complicated. I'm not primarily a network administrator, I'm a software engineer, so I don't want to have to understand all the intricacies of complex backups. I just want to be able to set up a reliable backup that happens in an automated way and notifies me in a clear fashion if the backup completes and warns me if it doesn't complete. Altaro hit all the right balance of those features for our small company. Pros The price is great for a small business that needs decent backup software with a good feature set. The interface is easy to use even if creating backups is not your primary job. The daily notifications are great and summarize what's happened to make it easy to see if anything needs your attention without devoting a lot of time to reading the email. Cons Needs occasional hand-holding. For a couple reasons the backups will fail once or twice a quarter. Sometimes it's due to needing to reauthenticate with my offsite storage on a Synology array but other times it's because the Altaro services stop working on the backup server so I have to stop and restart them. Pros The MSP pricing is excellent compared to all others and very simple to get my head around. Simply buying a license per server backed up is much easier than worry about cost per GB and cost per CPU core that some others think is normal. Cons On the MSP dashboard managing hosts regards licencing is a little tedious and confusing. Simply converting an existing installation from the 2 guest to MSP version is a hassle and not obvious how to do without a lot of trial and error to work it out. Clients appreciate that we can recover their business servers within a few hours instead of a few days. We have been using Altaro VM Backup since v. 4 I think. I was impressed with the early version and have specified Altaro VM Backup as our standard for Virtual Machine environments. The addition of the Cloud Management Console and integration with ConnectWise is a big plus. Pros Setup and configuration is fairly quick. Restore options allow for a granular file level from a VM image backup. Ability to restore to different host. Ability to copy an Offsite backup to remote location. Support for Cloud storage sites for off site backup storage. Speed of recovery time on a failed host. Able to restore a VM to new host within a couple hours. Compression and de-duplication saves storage space on backup media. Product support is excellent. Usually able to solve errors within the Support Chat. Support is always ready to answer even the simplest question to help us out. Cons The local management console is not password protected. Limited explanation of error messages in the software. We appreciate it! We do understand where you are coming from here, however, efforts should be made to tighten the OS security layers in this case. If a hacker gains admin access to the server, this means that they have access to the backup data with or without the Altaro console. We agree that having restricted access to the console would be a great feature; in fact, we have discussed having granular access for different users but we cannot offer an ETA for this just yet. Currently, our primary recommendation here is to strengthen password policies for accounts that have server logon access, and restrict access through the OS layer itself. WS William S. Easy to use, works well, interface simple and clean. Pros VM Backup allows you to backup you virtual machines in the possible easiest way. Just install the program on a windows server (not client) and follow the instructions, you will set VM backup very quickly. First add the node(s) which contains the VM, then add the backup storages. With a simple drag and drop you configure the VM to backup and their destinations. Then you set the time and I suggest also to configure a daily report via email. Restoring a backup is a very easy task, you can also choose from restoring it in a sandbox instead of the production environment. I use VM Backup with VMWare and HyperV environments, no problems at all. Support is excellent (via email or chat). Cons there is nothing I don't like about VM Backup Review Source DU David U. This fit the bill fairly well and was pretty easy to use. It was overall flexible enough to allow us to backup direct to our NAS's and restore files fairly easy. If you are looking for a lower cost solution that can do a good job backing up VM's I would give Altaro a hard look. If you need it for a lot of small sites I would look at their central console though. Pros We needed a backup solution that would work for remote locations and did not need all of the "extras" that some products have that end up pushing costs up. This fit the bill fairly well and was pretty easy to use. It was overall flexible enough to allow us to backup direct to our NAS's and restore files fairly easy. Cons We purchased approximately 25 copies and used them at all of our remotes and at the initial purchase they had no way to manage them all via a central console. This has since changed but last I checked it adds a nice bit to the cost if you want it as an addon. Some of their scheduling screens cab be a bit weird to figure out. Fortunately i've never had to restore a VM, however I'm pretty confident how to restore and I hope it would work just as advertised. Cons A little complicated when using more than one physical server (I have 4 VM's total, 2 on each machine), and I am running two different versions (v7 & v8). In every critical moment i was sure i have a backup and when i need to recover a virtual machine it works in 100% of the cases. We've resold and recommended it to a few customers of ours. We've been using it ourselves for years. It's by far the best backup software we've used. We love how we set it up and then it just works like clockwork. I wish there was some way it could set up a method to alert you from the cloud ONLY when it was supposed to backup but didn't for whatever reason. We keep the failures and success e-mails coming in because we need to try to cross reference to make sure certain backups were a success and that it didn't just go offline, or the e-mail alert stopped working - and the backup stopped working. I also wish it could monitor the hardware as well...so it could tie into DellAlert and send that to the cloud...so it could be a total backup and monitoring solution for us. For now though, it does the primary job of efficiently backing up everything. Pros Reliable, Easy to set up, and Efficient. We also love how it dedups data and how it can alert you when a backup fails. Cons I did not like how the upgrade required us to create all the backups all over again requiring us double the storage space. That requires some juggling. But after a few successful upgrades, we cleaned house and had it back to normal.
