No negative feelings and we have it running at a lot of our customers, most installations just run, notifications keep coming in, and backups are made. We sometimes test it , and every time the backup can be restored. Not losing sleep over this. Pros I liked the easy, no fuss install. being up and running in 15 minutes. Cons It used to be that the backups were easily accessible, vhd files in a subfolder, nowadays it's more complex, I guess because of regulations/ security. I liked how it was before, that way I could even use the backed up VHD as any VHD. Most of the functionality is now already in Altaro, so there is less need for it. But would have been nice to have. But to be honest I don't miss it. Sysadmin Computer Networking Used the software for: 2+ years ### "it is ok but I would not reccomend it to anyone" February 11, 2022 3.0 to get to the most actual issue: when your backup reaches a certain point and gets too big altaro becomes almost useless. they told me there is no way to improve this situation. when the backup gets too large and you need to do it daily the health check cannot finnish within 24 hours and starts all over again instead of continuing or something. I think i will give Iperius or Uranium a try. This is unbearable. "we are working on version 9 - that one is going to be better" ... well yes , maybe... but since that one I will have to pay another 1000€ or something like the last time, it is just infuriating... not having a system work anywhere close to fine. Very high maintanence software. needy. Pros \- many functions - relatively easy to use (when it works) - reasonable price - fast and relatively good support Cons I cannot belive how SLOW this thing is. It has been a fight for years to make it run at some acceptable speeds. Painfully SLOW! no matter how good the harware is. It does not use the RAM/CPU/HARDDrives/NETWORK etc. fully. And noone can tell me why. I guess they have some crappy programming that throttels the threads or something. For example: it can do , when it works properly, a backup of like 10VMs with 3-4TB in like half a day. But it cannot finish a health check of the backup in less then 24 hours or resume the next day where it stopped. It starts all over again and never finishes. The drives have a RAID 10 Array and can do 500MB/S. yet the check barely challanges the drives. and then there is the issue with updates: half time I had to do a version update whithin the same big release, I had issues like: the backup got corrupted, or the settings got lost or similar. With help from the support team we could then solve some of the issues but then here we have the next problem: you have to renew the license to have access to support. which is fine BUT - when you renew after your old support has expired, you pay not from the day you buy support but rather from the day your old support expired -> RIPOFF! in my oppinion - they mess up the software with some small update inbetween and then you have to pay to resolve it. - one issue we solved ourselves and found out months later: your RAM on the Server NEEDS to be in DUAL CHANNEL or else Altaro will behave like absolute crap. Reason for choosing VM Backup We were thinking about Veem but that was too steep in the pricing. Then someone told us about altaro. But that was a mistake. We had a situation causing us to move away from another backup vendor due to issues (not being able to depend on a backup to simply do its job causes sleepless nights after a while). We installed Altaro VM Backup, configured it - all in 15 minutes, including set-up of the email alerts and left it for the evening. Next day - Emails are usually our first encounter as to what occurred overnight - They were all Green! Seriously - a big wow from us! 7 Virtual Machines all backed up successfully and in a time window that seriously made me look twice. The compression and the speed of backups - wow! Pros I have a few things I like - but the most nicest thing: The user interface on Altaro product always seems so simple, and logical. Being in IT support, I dread those times when it takes 20 minutes to work out the GUI or interface to try and restore a file or check a backup log. Cons OK - Not being funny - I'll have to come back to this question, because I struggle to think of something I really don't like right now. President Information Technology and Services Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Astoundingly Good; Very Affordable" July 12, 2022 5.0 Veeam is the Cadillac of backups, and there are lots of Chevys that will get the job done but really make you work at it, but Altaro sits in the sweet spot of a great value with lots of features. I have deployed it at every client that runs VMs on Windows, and it has saved the day several times. Setup takes about five minutes, especially if you are using an attached target. Even complicated NAS-based backups with off-site copies (another great feature) can be set up in less than 30 minutes for every VM on a server. Pros The ability to schedule sandbox restores drew me to Altaro, but honestly, the few times that I have needed Tech Support (including one time on a holiday) it was outstanding. The quality of the support, the speed with which I can reach someone, and the genuine politeness of the staff make getting support painless. I also like the ability to do off-site copies of the backups. This work s great when I use a direct-attached targets like ioSafe drives and then replicate the backups to portable USB drives to go off site. Cons The software is amazingly full featured, but I would like to see the sandbox restore take a snapshot of the services snap-in on the restore once started, shut down the sandbox, delete the restored machine, and send me the image so that I know it worked. The first time you put in the license code it is a bit convoluted. This is nit picking. Pros What I like most about Altaro is the new ability to backup direct to Azure Cloud Storage accounts. This has been a game changer for us in our DR plan. It allows us to feel comfortable that we have local and cloud versions of our backups. That is a killer feature at the Altaro Price point. Cons The only con I have is that we have had some occasional issues when using large USB devices for local backup. They seem to produce alot more errors with Altaro that with previously used products. Usually a reformat of the drive and the system seems to function well with it again. What I mean by that is, the means to bring up or restore an environment is a very timely fashion on multiple segmented networks if necessary. This is Disaster Recovery and seems to be a problem for Altaro to figure out. As a side note, offsite backup locations can be LAN, Cloud but not tape media should ppl be using older LTO drives. Pros It is relatively easy to restore my Hyper-V servers, granular recovery takes some time but overall, I am pretty happy with this suite at my org Cons Altaro has a replication model that doesn't work well for DR. If you have subnet a and subnet b both segmented and seperated by WAN VPN, do not expect this to be a viable DR solution. YES, it does allow you to restore from VM (boot from VM) in the second backed-up subnet, but if that subnet is different to the VMs original subnet, those machines will not talk. Networking 101. There needs to be a mechanism to restore VMs in a DR site predictably and immediately without this limitation. I think I read that Altaro is introducing a functionality change for DR in the coming release that addresses this and I have enquired as to specs. Right now, my option is to backup to my local NAS, commit a second backup to segment 2 NAS for resiliency and incase of fire or disaster and recover. Slow venture but at least there is copies offsite and available. Since then been using in various environments (1000+ VMs) and amount of progress from old versions to the new is significant. I could see how much effort and expertise goes into the product and how it is trying to be on the cutting edge of backup technology. We have been using Altaro over 2 years on all our hosts. Pricing is far better compared to other similar backup solutions in the market. Pros We are a medium-size organization with Altaro installed on 6 hyper-v hosts. Experience has been great with Altaro when it comes to backups of all our VMs and restoring data/files. Very easy setup and administration even a nontechie can get this set up in less than 15 minutes. GUI is very intuitive and gives you all the information required. Cloud management console makes it easier to manage and receive alerts from anywhere. Support is great and always very helpful in resolving issues promptly. 5 stars!! Cons Little sensitive to storage device errors. However, nothing to concern about as it usually gives you plenty of information to troubleshoot the issue. I've used it for quite a few years, and it has definitely made my life easier when things have gone sideways. Pros The software is easy to configure, quick and does a good job backing up the VM's. File level (including single exchange emails) restores are easy and quick. Restoring an entire server is equally simple. It has definitely saved me on several occasions. Cons The offsite facility could use some work, specifically with regard to using the offsite server. We've resold and recommended it to a few customers of ours. We've been using it ourselves for years. It's by far the best backup software we've used. We love how we set it up and then it just works like clockwork. I wish there was some way it could set up a method to alert you from the cloud ONLY when it was supposed to backup but didn't for whatever reason. We keep the failures and success e-mails coming in because we need to try to cross reference to make sure certain backups were a success and that it didn't just go offline, or the e-mail alert stopped working - and the backup stopped working. I also wish it could monitor the hardware as well...so it could tie into DellAlert and send that to the cloud...so it could be a total backup and monitoring solution for us. For now though, it does the primary job of efficiently backing up everything. Pros Reliable, Easy to set up, and Efficient. We also love how it dedups data and how it can alert you when a backup fails. Cons I did not like how the upgrade required us to create all the backups all over again requiring us double the storage space. That requires some juggling. But after a few successful upgrades, we cleaned house and had it back to normal.
