### "Canvas x draw Review"

March 15, 2023

4.0

Pros

I was pleased to discover Canvas X Draw, a user-friendly vector drawing tool which enables users to craft professional-looking illustrations with minimal effort. The program is equipped with a wide range of features, such as creating and modifying shapes, changing colors, inserting text and effects, and exporting files in a selection of formats. Moreover, it is an excellent choice for crafting logos, illustrations, and other graphics.

Cons

Canvas X Draw has limited options for customizing objects, colors, textures, and other design elements.

### "Wow - what a joy to use"

November 11, 2024

4.0

I was a previous user of Canvas X on Mac decades ago, before it went away onto the PC platform. Mostly I used it for scientific manuscript and grant applications and other graphic design. I've struggled with Illustrator for years and never could get a handle on it with just sporadic use. I was pleased to find that Canvas X Draw is available on Mac but was a little worried that all of the reviews are several years old. My experience this weekend in putting together a floor map for a complicated research facility was an absolute joy. All of the tools are as easy to use as I remember and there are lots of nice amenities. I was able to get the whole job done in one weekend and it would have taken my weeks to complete in Illustrator, but I probably would have given up first. Other features include the ability to edit photos directly in Canvas to do common tasks like set image color levels, or making transparent background without having to go into photoshop.

Pros

Nice pricing including annual subscription License key provided immediately with purchase through email Easy install (drag and drop in App folder) Very intuitive interface and easy to use. Lots of functionality Much easier to use than Adobe products Quick launch

Cons

1\. Old fashioned selection method requires you to draw a box around an object or click on it directly (as in MS Powerpoint). (This is difficult for thin lines that extend over other objects). The method used in Illustrator, Filemaker, Keynote, etc. is better (press mouse and then drag over any portion of an object). 2. They removed the old intuitive printing tools. It is difficult to figure out how to set custom page sizes and magnify/reduce the image to fit the printed page.

Illustrator is too cumbersome and very tedious in performing simple tasks. I need to watch a You-tube video every time I use it.

### " Critique of Canvas X Draw"

February 1, 2021

4.0

I love Canvas and have been an active user since the mid-1990's! I am a MAC user and was EXTREMELY happy when Canvas for Mac was reestablished a few years ago!

Pros

This software compares very favorably with CorelDraw but is less expensive and in my opinion much easier to use!

Cons

In my business I do graphics or applique's for athletic and travel bags requiring multiple layers. I find the "Offset Path" function sadly lacking. "Offset Path" can only be used for what I consider very simple polygons and not more complex figures such as lettering or anything that has multiple edges/rounded curves, and punchouts. As a result, I also need to use CorelDraw to apply their "Contour" function. Also I find the "Extrude" function in Canvas X Draw unwieldy! In my bag design I like to create a 3-D effect to show clients what their end product looks like! Unless the operator has a good feel for 3-D coordinates this is problematic. I like the "Extrude" function from CANVAS in the '90's where not only could you apply a 3-D effect, but the individual panels could be ungrouped, color applied, and then reassembled into a finished product. Also there is a typo in the "Arrowhead" attributes editor under "Full". It says "Buttom" rather than "Bottom".

Alternatives considered

[CorelDRAW](https://www.capterra.com/p/124823/CorelDRAW/)

Reason for choosing Canvas X Draw

Canvas is an easier program to use and very straight forward! Functions are aptly named and from that you can guess their use! CorelDRAW does have functions that I need so I have to use it in conjunction with Canvas. My main drawings are done in Canvas X Draw, saved in a common format, and then transferred to CorelDRAW for completion; mostly for application of the Contour function. Also ... Canvas X Draw is not compatible with either my embroidery machine software \[PULSE for Tajima\] or my IOLINE 300 cutter!

### "Interesting merge of vector and CAD ilustration tool"

April 9, 2022

5.0

In our magazine we use Canvas X Draw for chart ilustration making. It works perfectly and charts/graphs are very nice and with precise interpretation of data. For us, it is very important.

Pros

CAD file import and postediting in Canvas X Draw document is the most "welcome" in vector illustrating tools market. Canvas open numerous different CAD formats, and you can easily integrate that illustrations in you design.

Cons

Canvas X Draw did not support UNICODE ... and it is the greatest problem with all standalone versions till now.

### "Hate Aggravator, but Love Canvas!"

January 26, 2021

5.0

Been using Canvas for many years to make publishable figures and graphics for scientific presentations. All editions of canvas have been super easy and intuitive to use, this latest version being no exception. Importing graphs from other programs also go in clean and easy. I've used other programs and everything gets scrambled and you need to be a high level graphic artist to use these. Canvas is good for novices on up. Edits are quick and easy in canvas. You can make beautiful elaborate figures or keep it simple. Export is clean too. Save as a PDF or other file and everything you see in the canvas document is conserved. Aggravator doesn't ever work this well.

Pros

Ease of use is number 1. The way the program is laid out is very intuitive. Lines draw the first time and when you click on something it actually selects it. Layers work too! Competitors software (aka Adobe Aggravator) need years of training to draw a simple line. Canvas just works the first time. I very much appreciate that new versions work like the old ones. You've added features but kept the old ones in place and they work the same. No hunting, no "where did they put that" or "it used to be able to".

Cons

I do wish there were more fill options for shapes. Also I typically have to convert the canvas files to another file type to print especially if they are being printed on a large format plotter. Older versions had trouble "talking" to HP plotters, but will have to see how the latest version works. It also has some trouble reading really old canvas files.

Switched from

[Adobe Illustrator](https://www.capterra.com/p/227125/Adobe-Illustrator/)

Adobe illustrator is impossible to use and the new version even more so. They moved everything and nothing works like it used to. I can't draw anything. Imports scramble, editing takes forever. Lives up to it's nickname as adobe aggravator! Used canvas too and it's much faster, cleaner, simpler interface. I'm not the most tech savvy but not a slouch either and adobe has moved beyond me.

### "Affordable dimensioning drawing with full functionality"

January 26, 2021

5.0

I prepared numerous PowerPoint presentations and found that Canvas was so superior to the drawing tools in PPT. It helped me design our new home and even our cabinetmaker was impressed with the detail and accuracy of Canvas. Now I mostly use it for woodwork projects. Very impressed with how they keep up with the MAC software changes. Other companies (like MYOB) just gave up.

Pros

It’s intuitive and has an excellent instruction manual with a very helpful start for first time users. One of the few affordable MAC drawing programs with accurate dimensions for technical drawings or even for planning the next woodwork project. Multiple layers are a breeze. If you want to extend your drawing capability, Canvas has the capacity to go all the conceptions.

Cons

I have used this product through my whole working life as an educator in Radiology. Each version was incrementally better. There is nothing about it I don’t like.

### "Better than it was, still not great"

January 26, 2021

4.0

It works for what I do, mostly technical drawings. I had been looking for another app when it looked like Deneba was going to drop support for Canvas and Mac. I am glad they stuck with it and came up with a good upgrade

Pros

The drawing/drafting portion is very good, and has gotten much better through all the iterations from Canvas X onward. It mostly all just works, drawing, importing, exporting. It is pretty intuitive, especially if you have used other drawing apps. It is now at a place i wish it had been several years ago. The team seems to finally thrown their support behind this version for the Mac and I hope it continues. I don't use the page layout part very much, but it seems to be ok.

Cons

The photo editing part is terrible, not much changed over the years. It is usable for very simple tasks. Not anywhere close to Photoshop, which I usually fall back to if I need to do anything involved. It could use a lot of work to improve it.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing Canvas X Draw

I have been using Canvas for years and have tons of drawings that I needed to be able to convert. Staying with Draw was the logical choice, if it had been any good.

### "All-in-one that works"

February 9, 2021

4.0

I have been a Canvas user for a very ling time, beginning in the 90s. The software grew well, but then dropped off the stage for a while until resurrected. I was very happy to see it return. I have the full suite of Adobe products at my disposal, but I like Canvas for its combined capabilities in one software package. I hope it continues to grow.

Pros

It is very helpful for me, using a mixed bag of design elements, to stay within one package for graphic design elements, text, and images with a full suite of effects and capabilities. The results look professional and well-executed by the software, with a good selection of tools for my projects.

Cons

The Mac version has lagged a bit over the years, but is improving now that its base has been re-established. Minor software bugs appear, but the updates are reasonably spaced to keep it working well.

Reason for choosing Canvas X Draw

The all-in-one workflow is expedient for me, and the results are just what I needed.

### "Canvas on the Mac is Back to Excellence"

February 4, 2021

5.0

I have been using Canvas since 1989. It has been a great companion for all my illustrations in presentations and publications. I highly recommend Canvas X Draw To students, particularly in science and engineering. I am very pleased that Canvas GFXis reaching out to customers and making great efforts to further improve it. Already at this point, it is very clear that Canvas is not only back on the Mac, but much better than any version we ever had on the Mac before.

Pros

Canvas X Draw is easy to use, but it can also do very sophisticated things that you will explore as you need them, e.g. sprite effects, replication with transformation, advanced selections in pixel graphics, intersections of objects, etc etc. One great strength of Canvas X Draw is the ability to draw with high precision, enabled by inspectors that display and accept numerical input for object shapes. Another great strength of Canvas X Draw is the easy combination of vector graphics with pixel graphics and text. Further, the organization of documents into layers and pages enables great functionality.

Cons

My biggest dislike is that there is still no shortkey like OS X's "Cmd-~" to quickly switch between different tabs/windows. Generally, it would do Canvas X Draw good to allow more functions to be accessed through user-defined shortkeys and let users choose between "original" and more "modern-Mac-OS-X-like" key functionality. In modern OS X, for example, you can add to a selection by holding down the Command Key, while Canvas X Draw still uses the historic shift key for that purpose. A great addition would be to improve the current pixel map so that is fast enough for handwriting and drawing, e.g. similar to what Sketchbook can do. Then we could use Canvas X Draw in online meetings to quickly sketch or write. Currently, we can generate pixel maps and write on them with a pen, but this is too slow and the pen is not very versatile. Finally, I dislike that it is so difficult and time consuming to transfer an existing subscription between different computers. If this is "salesmanship" intended to urge users to buy several subscriptions at the same time, then additional subscriptions should at least be generously discounted. Adobe does a much better job in this regard with their Creative Cloud subscriptions.

### "Canvas X Draw"

January 26, 2021

5.0

See above

Pros

In a prior life, I used Canvas for about 10 years when it ran on a MAC and PC. Then for whatever reason they stopped marketing the MAC version of the software. Myself and my coworkers were disappointed because for the most part we were a MAC shop. I retired from the position and in retirement I started working part time for one of my former graduate students. About the same time, the world recognized that MACs could run Windows, therefore I got the windows version of Canvas X. My application was to convert our spectral data into figures which, in turn, could then be published. My experience was a was a bit unsatisfactory. Not with Canvas X, but the weird (to me) intricacies of Windows. I took an enormous sigh of relief when I discovered Canvas X Draw. I use this program almost daily. It is virtually the same as the PC program but with secure, easy to use, and reliable interface. I am not an engineer, rather I am a PhD chemist, and I don’t use all of the complex capabilities of Canvas X Draw. One critical aspect of Canvas X Draw is its stability. Without that facet, I would not use the software. So far, I have gone through two updates and nothing was broken … the updated program worked flawlessly. In summary, I have used Canvas software for many years, and to me, I find the Canvas X Draw version to be the best. I would recommend it to anyone.

Cons

So far I have no issues in the software that I would describe unsatisfactory.

### "Best Design Layout software for Mac"

January 20, 2022

5.0

We have used Canvas since the beginning. This software is crucial to our survival as a business. We are also able to make any document or brochure exactly the way we want it. The software is powerful yet easy to use.

Pros

This software allows us to open any image, PDF, schematic, drawing or any other image to incorporate in our technical documentation. We rely on this software everyday to design communication systems while keeping the scale of the original document. We could not prosper as a business without this software.

Cons

This software has all the features and more than we can possibly use.

### "Canvas firever"

January 26, 2021

4.0

As a Mac user of Canvas since version 1 in the 1980s it was a relief that a new Mac version came along and saved me from using a virtual windows machine. It’s great for providing documentation and build instructions fir our electronics. I use it to bring all sorts of information together into one document. Much slicker than other programs that can do the same.

Pros

Handles lots of file types, although sadly can’t export cvx. Mixes images and vector objects really well. Struggles with character position when opening pdfs. Lots of new features that have helped with 2D design.

Cons

Still crashes occasionally. Still some bugs that have been around for decades. Imported files don’t use the default units. Can no longer set up the keys for particular operations. Can be done through the OS but it’s not as slick. Could do with zoom on mouse wheel.

Reason for choosing Canvas X Draw

There’s no comparison. Open office draw is a dinosaur.

### "Good Product"

February 1, 2021

5.0

I am glad that it transitioned from only being available for the PC environment for several years since I had to keep an older MAC OS on a second computer and never felt as comfortable in the PC version as I am in the MAC version. The question below about switching from another product to Canvas X Draw is yes since it was from Claris CAD to Canvas to Canvas Draw to Canvas X Draw

Pros

Since I have been using the Canvas design product for over twenty-five years, (at least) after converting from Claris CAD, I have enjoyed the flexibility between the vector design aspects and the pixel modification (paint type) aspects of the program. For me it is very versatile.

Cons

I have no cons since I am not into computer generated CAD.

### "Canvas X Draw as a Mapping tool"

February 1, 2021

5.0

So far it has been what I expected, a positive experience!

Pros

I have been using Canvas for Mac since it first appeared some 30 years ago, The ease of use, appropriate tools made the program unique in creating overlays of other maps, aerial photographs and satellite images. Canvas GIS was a great innovation which unfortunately not yet (???) returned to Mac. It.is a drawback for my current project on the coast of Kenya.

Cons

I miss the the GIS compatibility that exist on the PC version, particularly to import shape files as base maps or geocoded satellite data. Hopefully you will fix it for us! We are many geographers, like me, who has been addicted to maps with coordinates.

### "Combines the two other graphics programs I was using"

February 1, 2021

4.0

Easy to learn and use.

Pros

I started using Canvas 30 years ago instead of illustrator. I Love Canvas vs Photoshop and Illustrator which I still have to use sometimes when it is required for advertising, etc. Much prefer to use Canvas and I wish it were more widely used by Printers. It is so much easier to use and learn than either Photoshop or Illustrator. That files can be saved in so many formats is a plus. I haven't tried with the animated GIF's yet. For advertising, I am able to get the file sizes smaller than Illustrator, InDesign etc.

Cons

In some ways I miss the old Canvas 10. This Canvas quits on me sometimes with larger files. Very little to complain about with this app. Doesn't have the same intuitiveness that the old Canvas had when doing large documents or manuals.

Reason for choosing Canvas X Draw

It was deemed an excellent product and alternative to Illustrator, PageMaker, etc. when it first came out 30 years ago.

### "Canvas Draw "

February 1, 2021

5.0

Other than the learning curve previously mentioned, I have had no serious difficulties with this software.

Pros

Canvas Draw provides an excellent tool for design and drawing that includes both Vector and raster graphics capabilities- this was critical to my personal decision because it was required to work with our Laser cutter and 3-D printers. Additionally it has allowed me to easily take my visions for furniture and such and create layouts for them.

Cons

As with any professional software, the learning curve constantly grows as the capabilities expand. As a retired faculty, it takes me longer to acquire the skills necessary to remain fully competent with the software. On the other hand, there are a number of resources to assist with developing the skills needed to make this software function at its optimum level. The other issue that I am still undecided about is the transition from purchase to subscription software.

### "Long time user of Canvas"

January 26, 2021

5.0

One of the most complete and easy to use drawing software programs out there. I can do full architectural with saves to different formats for easy portability. Would love to see a 3D module available some day.

Pros

I've been using various versions of Canvas since V1.0 (yep, late 80's) on the Mac. For awhile it was exclusive to the Mac but during ownership change went over to windows. It was still a great piece of software but limited to PCs. The current ownership brought it back to the Mac but it doesn't have the full functionality of the more sophisticated version on a PC. Nonetheless, Canvas X Draw is an excellent piece of software and I can do everything I need to on it. Eventually, I hope they give it the full functionality of the PC version of Canvas.

Cons

Just would like to have the full features its big brother Canvas has on the PC.

### "My goto program for graphics"

February 1, 2021

4.0

I have used Canvas since version 1.0 was introduced by Deneba about 1990. It has had its ups and downs, especially stability-wise, but it always delivered best what I needed, great versatility, at a great price. I was at a loss when the product was discontinued for a while, and immediately came back onboard when it was reborn. It was a personal purchase and I use it in preference to software freely available to me at work.

Pros

My graphics needs vary a lot, not concentrated in one area, and this program covers them all. Sometimes I am making mechanical drawings, other times editing bitmaps, creating .svg files for my CNC, designing a birthday card, drawing a flowsheet. The positional accuracy of the software appeals to a person like me who has a mathematical mind.

Cons

The infrequent crash, not so common anymore; I save my work fairly often, but also so I can back out of a creative avenue that isn't productive.

Reason for choosing Canvas X Draw

I use it instead of programs with a narrower focus so I don't have to deal with learning and maintaining multiple applications. This is particularly important for a user whose needs vary widely.

### "The Swiss Army knife that just works"

February 2, 2021

5.0

I know it so well, it is almost always a good experience.

Pros

I've used Canvas for upwards of 25 years - seriously. I love the combo of vector drawing and bitmap editing, on one canvas. Layout and scaling is so nice. Like a lot of tools, it is how familiar one is with the options (and Canvas has a lot) that matters. It just works when I need to make a graphic for personal or professional use.

Cons

Functionally, Canvas hasn't really changed over last 5+ years. I wish the licensing hadn't moved to annual subscription (though I understand). I tend to upgrade mainly for OS compatibility, and now extend my license for same purpose.

### "Accurate & useful"

February 16, 2021

5.0

Been using Canvas at least 15 years, my woodworking designs would be much more difficult without it.

Pros

I make fine furniture, Canvas X draw gives me the ability to make highly detailed drawings for every project.it is easy to set custom scales, to put dimensions on every piece that I need to cut or fit. I have also used this app to make brochures and playbills for dance studios. Easy to incorporate images with test. Also have used this app for detailed engineering drawings for flood measurement projects.

Cons

There have been several problems I ran into, however, they all were due to my mis-understanding how something works.
