Application Server

As the name implies, an application server is a server that hosts applications, which include a variety of functions. These functions include databases, web service connectors, computer programming languages, and more. Application servers come in a variety of programming languages, such as C++, JavaScript, Haskell, and numerous other languages. Application servers are often referred to as "middleware" or "middle-tier applications" because of their positioning behind web servers.

Most small businesses may be somewhat familiar with application servers. .NET servers from Microsoft are among the more common types of these servers. Furthermore, many application servers are specifically built with small businesses in mind. These include Plesk, LiteSpeed Web Server, Apache, and more.
