Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET)

ARPANET (the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) was a computer network launched in 1969 for academic purposes, and then was decommissioned 20 years later. The merger of ARPANET and other individual computer networks helped form the internet. Additionaly, several current protocols employed by computer networks were initially developed for ARPANET, including the now popular TCP/IP protocol suite.
