Capterra Glossary
Compatibility refers to the degree to which a product meets some or all of the specifications for a particular standard. Two software systems can be considered compatible if they can work together without having to be altered. Compatibility also refers to the interoperability of any two computer products, including hardware and software, different versions of the same products, and differing product types.
Small businesses and startups in the tech industry conduct compatibility testing when developing applications to ensure that the applications they create and sell are compatible with most operating systems, networks, and web browsers. By practicing compatibility testing, small and medium businesses can ensure that their customers will be able to access their applications and respective features without issue, ensuring customer satisfaction. Even small businesses that don’t develop software should ensure that all new technology investments are compatible with their existing systems.
