ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a nonprofit organization that helps maintain the operational stability of the internet to ensure uninterrupted connectivity across the globe.

ICANN allocates IP addresses to various entities, manages the internet’s global domain name system (DNS), including root name servers, and maintains the internet protocol identifiers. Simply put, ICANN oversees the inner workings of the internet.

ICANN allocates a collection of IP addresses to various companies, institutions, and internet service providers (ISPs) that they can use for their individual computer systems. These IP addresses enable users to share information between devices across a company network.

What Small and Midsize Businesses Need to Know About ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)

Small and midsize businesses that wish to change their company domain name typically use an ICANN-accredited registrar, who is permitted to offer domain name registration services. These registrars specify the terms of the domain name registration and allow companies to choose a new domain name as long as it isn’t claimed by another entity.
