Extension

An extension is a file that is programmed to enhance the capabilities or data available to a basic program. Extension files add extra functionality to standalone programs, although they typically are not independently functional. Some extensions can be installed automatically, while others require manual installation.

In relation to operating systems, a filename extension is a suffix used to name a computer file. Common file name extensions include .txt, .docx, .pdf. Some computer filing systems limit the length and format of file extensions, while others do not.

What Small and Midsize Businesses Need to Know About Extension

Most small businesses use extension files to enhance the productivity of their employees. For instance, browser extensions are commonly installed on internet browsers within a company to allow employees access to digital services they would otherwise not have access to. Examples of popular browser extensions for professionals include spell checkers, ad blockers, and stopwatch browser extensions. Filename extensions are also commonly used by professionals when sharing company files to relay important information regarding the formatting and contents of the file being shared.
