Capterra Glossary
String
In the computer programming space, string describes a data type that is stored as a sequence of text in a program's source code. A string typically appears as plain language in computer code and is explicitly interpreted by a computer script. Strings are often used by software development companies to efficiently store, find, or change data within a computer program.
What Small and Midsize Businesses Need to Know About String
While strings are used in a variety of programming applications, it can be helpful to explore and understand a specific use case. For example, video game development companies often use strings to easily locate and change the value of variables that exist in their video games.
Let's say a video game developer wanted to change the hair color of a game character from purple to yellow, they would simply locate the string in the video game's code that determines the hair color. They would then replace its current variable value from “purple” to “yellow”, instantly changing the desired element of the game.
