Subnet Mask

A subnet mask is a 32-bit number that comes in the form of ones and zeros and is written in the same way as an IP address. A subnet mask will also divide an IP address into two parts, thus creating two different components of a network. These masks are required to access the internet via TCP/IP, which is the networking protocols that allow for computers to be able to network. The first 24 bits are the network address and the last eight bits are the host address. This allows for the connection of a computer to the wider internet.
