IP Address (Internet Protocol Address)
An IP address is a unique number that is assigned to every device that is connected to the internet by an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Example: 192.124.800.3. This number, however, is not permanent and changes each time a device connects to a new network. IP Addresses are generally not visible online, but if the IP address is uncovered, it can reveal the general location of the user.

Small businesses often need to know their IP Addresses to set up new hardware, software and devices. IP numbers are also crucial for use in local SEO, where the searcher is seeking an establishment or service nearby, but it is important to understand that IP addresses can change. If using a desktop computer to download sales reports in the SMB location, it will have one IP address. If the owner of a SMB later uses their laptop at a coffee shop to check their employee schedule, they will be using an entirely new IP address.
