Capterra Glossary

Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS)

Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) is a cloud delivery model that comprises six communication functions:

  • Enterprise telephony

  • Meetings via audio, video, and web conferencing

  • Unified messaging

  • Instant messaging

  • Mobility

  • Communications-enabled business processes

A service provider operates and maintains the above functions on behalf of an organization, freeing up labor and resources. The provider delivers services for a monthly subscription fee and manages communication infrastructure such as racks, data centers, and audio-visual software.

What Small and Midsize Businesses Need to Know About Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS)

An SMB might invest in UCaaS to outsource the maintenance of communication technologies to a third-party provider, improving security and compliance. Because UcaaS is a cloud-based delivery model, SMBs don't have to maintain on-premise infrastructure such as data centers and servers.
