A messaging application programming interface (MAPI) is a programming interface that allows an application to transmit or receive email over the Microsoft Mail system. Fortunately, the MAPI system easily integrates with many programs. There are many programs that are MAPI compliant. This includes Microsoft Outlook, Scalix, Zimbra, HP Open Mail, and many more.

If a small business uses MAPI software to send or receive email, they will need to ensure that their mail client is MAPI compliant. However, not all small businesses use MAPI. A small business owner should check to see if they need MAPI compliant pieces of software before making a purchase. If a small business uses another type of email service (such as Gmail) then this isn't necessary.
