PX (Private Exchange)

Capterra Glossary

PX (Private Exchange)

A Private Exchange (PX) refers to a telephone exchange that is private, with its use limited to one specific organization. A PX doesn't connect to the public telephone network but allows employees within the same business to reach each other quickly and at a lower cost because fewer phone lines are needed. For example, an employee in the HR department may phone an employee in accounting by simply dialing their extension number. This facilitates cross-business communication.

What Small and Midsize Businesses Need to Know About PX (Private Exchange)

Today, organizations have a plethora of options when it comes to their internal telephone systems. While many large organizations still use PX systems, others have switched to VoIP systems, which eliminate the need for traditional phone lines. Instead, telephone calls are made through a secure internet connection. SMBs should explore all telephone system options to find the right fit for their business.
